I was recently interviewed for a position and upon request, provided my references. The interviewer called my references and asked them (verbatim): "Has she ever stolen money from you"? Now bear in mind that one of the interview questions for me was "What would your ideal workplace be like" and I mentioned it would be one where there is trust! I understand what they tried to get at but surely there are several (better) ways to determine whether the candidate may be ethically compromised? On top, poor phrasing like that is far from professional and does not leave a good impression on either the applicant or their referees (because my boss came to me after the call from said company and was like "wth is up with them?) Fast forward a few days and they call me (after 5.30pm). I was driving so couldn't answer and they called a couple more times. After I called back, I learned that they were offering me the position and the person wanted to tell me some of the details on the phone before she sent the formal contract. We had briefly discussed the compensation during the interview and concluded that I would be open to negotiation because the interviewers mentioned various benefits in lieu of direct monetary compensation. They offered me stock options that apparently I couldn't sell easily because the company was still private, amongst other things, and I had a few questions about said benefits. The call concluded with the person telling me that she will send me the formal contract via email (that I had until the following day to decide on) and I said I will take a look and let them know. LITERALLY 20 MINUTES AFTER THAT, they send me an email saying that they changed their minds about the offer thought "I was not a cultural fit".
