Pros

Working with a team of queer and trans people.

Cons

The entire company is run by cis capitalists. Internally, the company is deeply transphobic towards its own employees. Executives have no sense of responsibility towards clinicians or other staff. In the entire time I was there, I was witness to numerous breaches of trust, transparency, empathy, or humanity. The chief of product is a WASPy cis het moron. The CEO is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The original founder bailed on the company within two years of founding it. This company is not a queer dream come true. If you are queer, working at FOLX will ultimately be more demoralizing and humiliating than working with a corporate team of cis het men.

Misalignment with Mission Statement

Pros

FOLX has a great mission and does good work for the community. Their program extends safe and affordable, affirming care to many folks who otherwise wouldn't have access.

Cons

My past experiences with FOLX have left me with mixed feelings about their commitment to their stated mission. As someone deeply aligned with their vision of providing equitable healthcare for LGBTQIA+ individuals, I was excited about being part of their team. However, my excitement waned as I witnessed a disheartening discrepancy between their mission and their internal practices, as it applies to recognition, hiring (internally and externally), and leadership. Despite being well-qualified and passionate about the work, I and other "minority hires" felt overworked, underappreciated, and exploited by leadership; many of whom are underqualified for the positions they hold. This left many of us questioning their dedication to their mission statement as it applies to their employees. During my time at FOLX it was (and continues to be) disheartening to learn about a pattern of turning down queer, POC, and non-binary candidates while seemingly favoring white, cis individuals. This stark contrast with their mission statement is deeply concerning and calls into question the sincerity of their efforts to fundamentally change healthcare for LGBTQIA+ communities, inside and out. FOLX needs to bridge this gap between their mission and their actions, ensuring that their practices align with their professed dedication to inclusivity and diversity. Authenticity and fairness are key components of achieving meaningful change in healthcare for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Unethical, unprofessional, and disorganized

Pros

Working with a few people who genuinely care about the mission

Cons

Those in leadership roles care very little about the mission and do not represent the communities they claim to care so much about. FOLX is just another way for these rich, incompetent, and unethical startup hoppers to line their pockets and move on to another venture once the company inevitably fails as a result of said incompetence. The overall company culture is toxic, punitive, and demoralizing.
