Pros

Hiring great talent is their specialty. The team is smart, quick, and collaborative. The projects are diverse, challenging, and fun.

Cons

Let's be real. Industries from tech to advertising are wrought with sexism. As other reviews have mentioned, Free Range is no different. Upon starting there, I was confident, strong-willed, dynamic, and not afraid to back down. By the time I left, the belittling, silencing, devaluing, and lack of support experienced daily finally got to me. I wasn't doing my best work. Who does, really, in that situation? Not me. I've never been one to fit into a box, unless I'm creating it myself. I persevered on up through my last day, as if I wasn't bothered by the inequality or unjust treatment I witnessed to myself and others. The damage experienced daily was subtle, but over time it snowballed into something I can now see was/is sexism. Thank you to the other reviews for naming something I couldn't. Now, I can also see that the culture of fear and competition that has been nurtured there in an attempt to champion strong creative actually heralds something toxic and dated. I am fortunate to no longer be a part of it. It's ironic. I left Free Range but, now that I'm gone, I'm finally free.

Pros

A ton of incredibly smart people from diverse academic backgrounds work at Free Range. A lot of the clients are mission-driven, others are smaller / scrappier businesses, which leads to a fun mix of project work-- even though it can also mean juggling a lot of projects on tight timelines all at once. In a nice bart-able location in Oakland.

Cons

As another reviewer stated, the level of sexism on the leadership team is unacceptable. As a woman, I have never felt so constantly belittled and patronized as when I worked at Free Range. It is really quite sad, because there are a ton of incredibly intelligent women working there, and they have the potential to push the level of work to an amazing place, but they are simply not being set up for success.

Pros

Great, super smart people and the opportunity to work with clients who have priorities other than the bottom line. Centrally located in downtown Oakland, with a cute and cool office. For freelancers they are lenient with where you set up shop, so you have some flexibility. Thought-wise they are leaders, BUT design-wise I thought there was a lack of a strong design voice at the top who can give clear, well-reasoned and helpful feedback.

Cons

I've never seen more blatant sexism in an office than under the current leadership at FR. I would say carefully consider working here if you're female and appreciate being taken seriously.
