Pros

Talking to the kids is enjoyable most days. You get to eat with them. There are social outings for the kids.

Cons

Very disorganized management, lack of communication between staff members (especially if you're part time), very little to almost no training provided, low pay, education is not valued much. A very huge con is zero breaks or lunches which is highly important in any job especially a job that has extremely difficult moments. It was presented as a place where you could make a difference in the young kids lives, but as someone with a degree in education and psychology I was disappointed when I felt like I was basically a babysitter. I feel like other than some outings that the kids go out on there is often not a lot of stimulation and they get restless and create stimulation, not always in the best way. It's very rigid in ways that I'm not sure are actually helpful to the kids. It's a hard and thankless job. I often was told I would be off at a certain time and then ended up having to stay 1-2 hours later. They have a high turnover. Most Youth Mentors are quite new and as confused as the others and then receive no guidance. I didn't last very long to say the least. I didn't look forward to this job like I thought I would. I left feeling super depressed everyday. I also don't feel like the kids are getting what their parents are what I can only assume is quite a lot. They deserve to have what was promised. My Manager didn't even introduce themselves to me and I had to seek them out.

Pros

Inclusive toward students who identify as gay, the jury is out regarding those who identify as transgender or non-binary, The clients are interesting, complicated and challenging sometimes The academic program is solid

Cons

The place is run like a small prison, using outdated behavioral modification techniques, public shaming, attack therapy. I did not have a degree in counseling yet they assured me I would only be helping out in therapeutic ways. Instead, they expected me to provide one on one counseling with the boys there. I quit because it was unethical and illegal. Do not send your son here. The boys are treated like convicts who have no humanity.
