Needs to look inward

Pros

Good mission. Staff is smart, dedicated, and hardworking.

Cons

Generation Hope publicizes itself as something it is not - as a well structured organization that values it’s employees and work-life balance, which it is not. From getting information, materials, resources that should be easily accessible, to receiving adequate support and training, to feeling empowered to getting work done without micro-management - working here was difficult to say the least. They want to expand quickly to where they aren’t prioritizing staff needs and satisfaction and not thinking strategically. This is causing one of the highest rate of turnover I’ve ever seen at an organization.

Pros

The work GH seeks to accomplish is so important and feels great to be part of a mission that can really make a difference.

Cons

This organization is growing very quickly and their internal systems are not prepared to handle that many staff members. There are components of the operations/HR function that directly contradict other statements depending on who says them and whims of management. Staff asks often for clarity around career growth and meaningful raises are pretty non-existent. The culture can get very micro-managey and leadership likes to make great statements about the importance of staff health but in reality most staff are burnt out, overworked and facing increasingly unrealistic expectations. People feel like they cant trust each other or higher ups and it’s very hard to feel valued and like you matter. There’s been several people seemingly fired/let go recently and even more who have quit. I expect more departures are coming soon.

Difficult work environment, growing too fast

Pros

The mission is so good and the work you’re doing is meaningful, but the organization is increasingly concerned with monetizing and commodifying the work.

Cons

If you’re considering it, run. The environment is so tense and uncomfortable because of union busting tactics from leadership. Turnover has been so bad the last couple of years and is going to get even worse. They’re most concerned with growing and scaling at any cost. Most of leadership has been here less than a year and has no idea how to run the day to day operations of the departments. They put in a good show and outward appearance of a functional, happy organization but cracks start to show after 6 months-year.
