Pros

By implementing efficiencies, utilizing genetic counseling assistants (GCAs), and embracing remote work, genetic counselors are able to direct their attention towards the more intricate and captivating aspects of their profession, rather than being burdened by administrative tasks. The option to work from home with flexible paid time off (PTO) further enhances their work-life balance. Additionally, the presence of a large clinical team fosters a rich pool of knowledge and provides a supportive environment for genetic counselors.

Cons

The company's culture has undergone significant changes over the past year. Previously, it was known for being collaborative, open, and innovative. However, upper management has now fostered a culture of fear, where individuals are discouraged from expressing dissenting opinions or any form of "negativity" due to the fear of retaliation or punishment. To make matters worse, key leaders who played a critical role in maintaining the company's culture have been let go. As a result, managers are now responsible for overseeing teams that are twice the size, and they may lack the necessary expertise in certain clinical areas. Rather than valuing innovative thinking, the company now prioritizes employees who simply work diligently and produce a high volume of patient output. Despite company-wide surveys expressing these concerns, there has been no effort or plan implemented to improve the company's culture.

Thank you for your feedback. Organizational change is inevitable and evolving our strategies for growth in a volatile business landscape makes change management all the more common. Change involves moving out of our comfort zones and adjusting habits/approaches developed over, at times, many years, which can present challenges. We remain committed to guiding the company through this time of change and are available to talk through some of these changes at any time.

Pros

Remote work, smart and caring colleagues

Cons

Genome Medical has a toxic culture and work environment. The negative reviews by genetic counselors in March and April 2023 reflect the predominant opinion among the clinical staff. Upper management says they value their employees and that employee satisfaction is a top priority, but they've taken no action internally to address concerns. Micromanagement is rampant. High-level leadership pretends to welcome feedback with no intention to act. Negative or constructive feedback from employees is spun into a fake positive or ignored completely. I've heard that employees have been explicitly told not to ask questions or provide constructive feedback in meetings. Seeking an understanding of clinical decisions from management has led to reprimands, compounding the culture of fear. I've also heard that employees who resigned with notice due to the toxic environment have been censored in what they could say to their colleagues before they depart. Benefits have been slashed, including an enforced cap on PTO which employees do not accrue. This major benefit is being advertised for recruitment. Caseloads have increased substantially with no additional pay. The pursuit of profitability/market sustainability at the expense of genetic counselors’ well-being and patient care is misaligned with the central tenets of genetic counseling. If additional revenue is needed to make the business case, the company's response shouldn’t be to overwork and undercompensate its current employees. There is resentment and disengagement among the genetic counselors, who are the heart of the company. This shouldn’t be a surprise to management--surveys soliciting employee engagement provided it loud and clear. The CEO and other C-suite executives have been silent. In response to criticism of the hasty changes enacted in the past eight months, senior management has told employees "This job isn't for everyone”. Well, this job isn’t for any genetic counselor who wants to provide true genetic counseling or anything beyond being a billing encounter generator.

Pros

The GCs are some of the best I have ever worked with, and truly care about their patients. Unfortunately I don't see many of them sticking around in the long run.

Cons

Any reviews from before September 2022 no longer apply, as everything about this company has changed since then. The old CEO from Genome Medical left and the CEO from GeneMatters came in with a new executive leadership team. Clinical GCs were asked to increase patient volume 50-200% depending on the role, and absolutely no new support was put in place to help manage the new patient load. There have been constant promises of new "efficiencies" that will be implemented but still no sign of any actual help. Leadership also (understandably) chose to consolidate the EMR portals so that the whole company is using the same one, but inexplicably chose the portal that has almost none of the functionality that we actually need to get the job done, and until all of that functionality is built in the GCs are working out of multiple systems simultaneously with so much more duplicated work and room for error. The new portal requires far more manual work on the part of the GCAs and the GCs must not hope that the correct prep is being performed ahead of time. On top of all of this, benefits have been cut so we are now doing far more work for far less pay. The new compensation packages, when taking into account the higher employee cost for medical benefits, the decimation of the annual bonus, and the heavily implied cap on the supposed "unlimited" PTO means my total compensation package is nowhere near competitive. In order to "make time" for more patients, all of my non-clinical responsibilities have been revoked, so there are no more opportunities for professional growth. The GCs say they feel like factory robots just cranking out patient reports. The focus is solely on quantity and any concern for quality of care is out the window at this point. The GCs are trying to do the best we can by our patients but there is only so much that can be done before we inevitably crash and burn. Leadership has absolutely no respect for the fact that we are HUMANS doing this work. We have literally been told that we are easily replaceable. But beware of complaining about any of this to anyone. People who are perceived as “negative” are being put on performance improvement plans. The culture of fear is alive and well at this company, and some people even feel like they have to lie about how long it takes them to complete patient notes so that they are not reprimanded or let go. If there was ever a company set up like a fascist dictatorship, where employees are told to sit down, shut up, and deal with it while being gaslit about what a wonderful company it is and what great things we are accomplishing, this would be it. So if you would prefer to not question the status quo, keep a smile on your face, and be a happy little cog in this capitalist pursuit of the almighty dollar, then this is the perfect place for you. If you would rather keep your sanity and actually be able to provide quality care for patients, maybe consider looking elsewhere.

We appreciate your feedback. We value the input of our employees and encourage them to share ideas, as it enables us to improve, learn and grow. We believe passionately in our mission to bring genomics care to as many patients as possible. In order to achieve this aim, we are creating new delivery models that leverage telehealth as well as increased efficiencies to support our clinicians in caring for more patients. During the latter half of last year, we launched an initiative to create consistency across our genetic counseling teams. Key to this effort is leveraging aspects of our model that enable our clinicians to both practice at the top of their scope and provide more patient encounters per day. This includes new tools and processes as well as extensive administrative support for both prep and follow-up. We understand and appreciate that this model of delivery and care might not be a fit for all genetic counselors. Our data continues to show that we deliver high quality patient care and patient satisfaction (2022 Net Promoter Score of 80), which we track and monitor closely. In addition, we are a growing organization and we are constantly trying new things and learning. Based on what we learn, we refine our approaches. This extends to efforts across our whole organization including our compensation philosophy.
