Pros

Decent pay, nice offices, some of the people are great…. But none of this makes up for the major cons.

Cons

This is not a place for professionals to do meaningful work and build their careers. This is a place for bad managers to boss around and belittle inexperienced junior people into carrying out their bad decisions. If you are a professional with actual skills or self respect you will quickly be running for the door (which is constantly revolving, all the talent realizing they were sold a dream that is actually a nightmare). There is no hope this will change until the founders are gone. Everything that is toxic about this places begins with them. Months after leaving I am regularly contacted by former colleagues who have reached their breaking point with the gaslighting, immaturity and abuse.

A Truly Toxic Workplace

Pros

Honestly, there are some really great people working there.

Cons

The toxicity of the culture is evident in all facets of the company, it is inescapable and insidious. The CEO consistently shows disrespect for employees, like when she left the quarterly town hall after 30 minutes (she couldn't give employees 90 minutes of her day... once a quarter, how rude). She also continuously micro manages all aspects of the business, every decision must be hers, no matter how small or insignificant, even the senior leadership team has no decision making authority. There is no psychological safety in this company, evident from the recent and sudden firings of key employees when they tried to speak up and assert their rights, one being the right to not be bullied in the workplace. About bullying, it's evident and largely ignored by the people who should put a stop to it. The HR team are gossipy, manipulative, and lack compassion. This was evident when I overheard one of them bragging about how they got their manager fired. On a whole if you are part of the "in crowd" you might do well, if you aren't you won't get recognition, rewards or promotions. They characterize their work environment as fast paced, a more accurate description would be that they push employees to manage overwhelming levels of work, which often means 10 to 12 hour days and no work life balance. Don't think that putting in all the extra effort will get you promoted or a raise, it doesn't, it just will lead to burnout. The amount of employees experiencing burnout, depression, and exhaustion is staggering and evident by the amount of employees on medical leave. One of the company values is "aim higher, then higher" this communicates that no matter what you accomplish, it isn't enough and you're expected to do more. That is a very demoralizing message. Many of the company processes and business practices are antiquated, redundant, and block employees' abilities to do their job. These processes show a lack of trust in the professionals working for the company, and micro manage the simplest of tasks. The company's in office policy is inflexible and policed creating a punitive approach, if you don't meet the requirements, it will be reflected in your performance review. The company has a lot of work to do to create an Inclusive workplace, their criteria of diversity is exceptionally narrow, leaving out most groups and individuals. These omissions have been brought up by many employees, and go unaddressed by senior leadership. This creates an environment of exclusion and prejudice. The seniormost leaders are all white, middle aged, women, with very little diversity within the middle levels of the senior leadership team. Think long and hard before you agree to work with this company, there are many other employers out there who don't have toxic environments.

We appreciate your candid feedback regarding the workplace culture. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination, harassment, bullying or inappropriate behaviour in the workplace, and encourage employees to report to their manager, HRBP, or through our anonymous third-party reporting line. We always strive to improve our people processes, including building a 360-performance appraisal process to increase transparency in our promotions, recognition, and rewards programs. Working in a fast-paced industry can certainly lead to burnout and exhaustion, and we strive to support our employees' work-life balance through vacation days, extended health benefits, and flexible work-from-home days. We recognize there is always work to be done to support an inclusive environment.

The most toxic company I've ever worked for

Pros

In amongst the chaos and nepotism, there are some genuinely kind and talented people working hard to deliver high-quality work and achieve exceptional results. I was also impressed with the Learning & Development opportunities available to employees, and in a different company that didn't have all the toxicities that GeoComply does, this would be a stand-out benefit. Finally, it's clear that GeoComply is in a hyper-growth stage and has no plans of slowing down. If all you care about is a company's performance (and aren't so fussed about culture or your well-being) then this may be a good fit for you.

Cons

During my time at GeoComply, I witnessed many red flags that I wouldn’t expect from any company, especially one of GeoComply’s size. I wish I'd seen a review like this before I joined, and I hope this makes future candidates make a more informed decision. To start, GeoComply is an incredibly toxic environment, built on nepotism, white privilege and wealth. The leadership team believes that throwing money at employees is what makes a great culture and they prioritize financial incentives over employee well-being. For example, the CEO has openly stated that she views mental health support as an external resource provided to employees, rather than a responsibility within the workplace. Employees are seen as numbers, not people. The company claims to prioritize in-person collaboration, but in reality, it appears to stem from a lack of trust in remote work and disregard for employee well-being. This was evident in an internal memo which expressed that employees experiencing minor cold or flu-like symptoms (and therefore wanting to work from home to avoid spreading it to their colleagues) would need to use one of their 5 sick days or come into the office, wear a mask and isolate in a corner - even if they are capable of working remotely. In today's post-Covid world, this lack of flexibility and consideration for individual circumstances demonstrates a lack of empathy from leadership and a narrow-minded perspective. Additionally, if you are someone who challenges the status quo, likes to voice new ideas/improvements, or offers a unique perspective, then you will not succeed at GeoComply. Psychological safety is non-existent, and the best way to succeed at GeoComply is by staying quiet, nodding your head and doing what you’re told. Employees are also facing huge amounts of burnout because of high workloads and extremely short turnaround times and unrealistic deadlines. Everything is deemed urgent, and often decisions are made on a whim without any regard for employee bandwidth. The company will claim that if you're unhappy you can speak to your manager or HR at any time, however, this couldn't be farther from the truth. Most managers are untrustworthy, and anything you say to HR in confidence will go back to your manager or straight to the CEO. The company never takes accountability for their actions, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this review receives a response that disregards everything I have said, as they have done for other reviews. It’s also worth noting that the company spent the last 4 months targeting specific employees and asking them to leave reviews, so a lot of the more recent ones are not sincere.
