A toxic workplace

Pros

Many people are very nice, the work was sometimes interesting. Management does a great job of telling you how smart they and their work is but it didn't seem any different from work at other agencies. There is a small attempt at culture but it's the bare minimum. Work/life balance wasn't too bad - it's an agency after all.

Cons

This was a terrible place to work! I have met people who were either ex-employees there or had heard of it through their network and shuddered at the name so it's definitely not just me. Flexible office hours and modern vacation policies were communicated but never really allowed. Some personalities of the management team are very strong and would dominate the mood of the open and cramped quarters. It is a toxic place full of fear and harassment and the quality of the work didn't seem that great.

Traumatizing.

Pros

Great restaurants nearby. Jordan Herald is a really, really wonderful guy who does not fit in with most of the other senior partners.

Cons

I met some of the most single minded, greedy, severe, insensitive, cruel, mean(yes, mean. Like how kids are mean on the playground) and self-serving people in partner positions at this agency. I was bullied for taking time off, even when they promise you it isn't an issue when you're being hired. I was chastised for even asking to work from home - heaven forbid one should need an actual sick day. Myself and others were strung along with promises of the position we hoped to work towards, only to keep our hopes at bay with offensively transparent excuses that are just a means of avoidance. This is not an agency that I found to promote professional growth. Many people who worked at this agency went on to leave the industry forever and change career paths entirely having seen the darkest and ugliest parts of an already challenging career path. If they didn't just delay your growth, the partners would altogether change your role ENTIRELY. During my time there I saw people working tirelessly and jumping through hoops to gain ground towards the position they wanted, only to then be plucked out of their position and put in an entirely different role based on what one of the partners(usually Leigh Himel) thought would suit them better. As for their 'Open Door Policy' - I found this to be almost entirely absent. If the door was even open, it didn't feel safe to go in. I saw people of all levels of seniority publicly shamed in front of the whole office, saw people reduced to tears and then dismissed as though their emotions were offensive. I received late night e-mail just to me, berating me and trivializing my experiences at the agency, often choosing to cite 'the real world' and how good we had it compared to the outside. Being in this agency, to me, felt very much like some abusive relationships I've been in. Gaslighting, manipulation, etc were common place in my time at Gravity. I do not believe this toxic environment is sustainable.

It's hard to respond in a way that could address this. I work from home two days a week and honestly are fine when people do as long as they meet deadlines. We do send people home when they are sick (which is as much a business thing as when people come to work ill it just spreads) so a lot of the comments in your post doesn't feel authentic. Regardless of any of that, it's clear you were not happy about the way your employment ended at Gravity nor your time there. I am sorry for that. Hopefully you will land somewhere else that is better suited to you.

Volatile but brilliant

Pros

You'll learn a lot. Everybody there is astoundingly smart and brilliant.

Cons

They expect a lot and don't give much back. The partners are especially gifted minds, but could do with a lesson or two on how to manage people. This place will grind you into dust, but you'll be much smarter when you come out of it.

Thanks for the feedback :) Certainly glad you feel you learned a lot. Hopefully you communicated some of your concerns while you worked here. We always tell everyone that we have an open door policy whether that's with your manager or if you feel your concerns aren't being addressed you can go to any one of the partners. The industry can be tough for sure, but it's always our intention to check in and give support as required. Best of luck with everything!
