Thank you for taking the time to leave a review – we value the feedback and will certainly take the points you’ve made here on board. People are central to the success of our business, and as you said, at Hammerson we feel our colleagues are our biggest strength. As you will have seen from other reviews, colleagues often comment on the quality of talent within the business and how this in turn creates a great working environment which we are very proud of. We are disappointed to hear that you feel that opportunity only extends to senior management, as our career development programmes are open to all and we are actively encourage progression within the business, with a growing number of senior management having started their careers with us in junior roles. We are working hard to make sure everyone who works here has the opportunity to fulfil their potential and we have recently launched Talent Central our colleague learning portal and performance development review portal.

Pros

1) Shopping Centres provide an interesting array of challenges 2) Relaxed depending upon your role 3) 'Hub of the community' workplace 4) Benefits (Healthcare/Pension/Sharesave)

Cons

1) Hectic depending on your role. 2) Culture of empire building and workload abdication. 3) Shopping centre decisions issued from the ivory towers of HQ without meaningful interaction at local level. 4) A 'them and us' culture between HQ and the shopping centres. 5) Hearsay/grapevine propagation of information (often more reliably than official channels). 6) Progression opportunities outside the London bubble, almost zero. 7) The term 'teamwork' is open to interpretation. 8) Micromanagement of small inconsequential projects or challenges / lack of management ownership for larger more complex tasks. 9) Praise for successful project completion rarely afforded to those directly responsible. 10) Superficial approach to professional development

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your experiences working at Hammerson, which raised some very useful points. We were glad to hear that you felt your role was varied and interesting within a 'hub of the community workplace’, we are proud to have some of the best assets in the sector and are often told by colleagues that our flagships are a highlight of working at Hammerson. We are also pleased to hear that you felt that the benefits (pension, share schemes, healthcare) offered to colleagues were positive; we feel that the significant benefits package offered at Hammerson helps us to attract and retain the very best talent. Thank you also for your feedback regarding information sharing between colleagues and between the centres and offices. We have been working hard on internal communications over the last 18 months which began with the launch of our new intranet in the end of 2017. I wanted to assure you have we have been focused on making improvements in this area and since you left we have launched the intranet with several new features to improve communication throughout the business, including a ‘shout-outs’ section on the homepage where all colleagues can share news and information. We were disappointed to hear that the relationship between the centres and offices was not as seamless as is should have been. We acknowledge that we have improvements to make in this area and I’m pleased to say that we have created a Group Employee Forum, including colleagues from across the business which is a constructive and collaborative space for employees to discuss people related and initiatives, and ensures better engagement and two-way dialogues between all departments including senior management. Thanks again for your review and if you wanted to discuss anything in more detail, please do get in touch with me via glassdoor@hammerson.com

Great, from the outside!

Pros

High levels of bureaucracy, red tape and lack of strategy coupled with a regime of recruiting inward looking and often incompetent department heads who excel at building empires and will undermine and discriminate at will. If you hold these qualities and capabilities it will ease in helping you to shine temporarily. But beware, the clouds will always descend in a haze of smoke and mirrors.

Cons

- No training. - No progression. - Regimented top down culture and seniors out of tune with today's work practices. - Strategy and fire fighting on the fly.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and bringing the points you’ve raised to our attention. We were sorry to hear that you feel that there is no opportunity for progression at Hammerson. Ensuring all colleagues have the opportunity for career development is important to us as we want to be able to retain and attract the best people in the sector. We appreciate that in some roles this may be limited and that is why we routinely offer the opportunity to move across teams, and many colleagues have successfully made the jump for example from surveying to investor relations to provide a wider skills base. We were also disappointed to hear that you feel that opportunity only extends to senior management, as our career development programmes are open to all and we actively encourage progression within the business, with a growing number of senior management having started their careers with us in junior roles. We clearly have more to do in this area so we are working hard to make sure everyone who works here has the opportunity to fulfill their potential and there will be more coming soon this year. In May 2019, we launched Talent Central our personal development and training hub, which is open to all colleagues. Hopefully this has gone some way to addressing your concerns regarding training. We work really hard to ensure that there are not high levels of bureaucracy at Hammerson and that senior management are accessible through our hot desking policy and with the executive team regularly having lunch with colleagues in the office restaurant. This is not a piece of feedback we receive regularly so I am really sorry that this has been your experience. I appreciate that some time has passed since you posted your review but if you would still like to discuss this and the other points you raised here (whether you still work at Hammerson or you have since moved on). You can get in touch direct at glassdoor@hammerson.com. Thanks again for your feedback and for all that you do
