Mission driven work, but growing pains

Pros

I arrived to HG during a time of great upheaval. Think poor management, disorganization at the leadership level, and high employee turnover. During my time there, leadership was replaced with people who seem smart, organized, competent, and collaborative. By the time I left, they'd put in a lot of effort to mop up the messes their predecessors left, greatly improving employee morale. For the most part my team consisted of warm, passionate people who cared about the mission of the organization and wanted to make a positive impact. The work was challenging, but it was great to be part of an organization that is making an impact. I hope they continue to grow in a positive direction!

Cons

Budgetary constraints, insufficient trainings (this was changing by the time I left), no curriculum to teach from (this was also changing by the time I left), highly stimulating and emotionally draining work. I saw huge improvements in the level communication and organization, but there's still room to grow here!

Pros

-Lots of warm and welcoming people on the team who I genuinely looked forward to seeing everyday. There were lots of people who I looked up to and learned from. -The farm stand and summer camp programs make a real positive impact on peoples’ lives. -Most times, I felt comfortable being my authentic self. People are very accepting, supportive, and come from all walks of life. Dress code is casual but you can dress up if thats your thing.

Cons

-Leadership completely restructured our team at the advisement of outside consultants who do not know anyone on the team personally… not to mention they seemed to have a poor understanding of our roles. They did not warn or consult our team before taking action. They made the professional writer do social media, and the marketing professional do grant writing. This was a huge red flag and upon receiving this news I knew it was time for me to go! -Leadership gives all these lectures on active listening and cultural competency which is ironic considering these are their greatest weaknesses. -Leadership is out of touch, constantly bragging about properly compensating their employees. This is a huge slap in the face to the dozens of struggling employees. -Leadership fostered a hostile environment. I felt horrible seeing the pressure they put on my supervisor and how it affected her. She was extremely dedicated and put in lots of extra hours, but it didn’t seem like she was shown any appreciation. I had a young adult coworker on my team who was exceptionally talented, disciplined, passionate, and knowledgeable about the organization. She was everyones go-to person for questions. They definitely recognized her talent as they kept adding more and more things to her plate… So I was shocked to learn the amount of harsh criticism she receives from leadership. Leadership has unrealistic expectations for employees that their brightest and hardest-working staff are unable to meet.
