Pros

Great mission, enjoyable perks and office, lovely coworkers.

Cons

Leadership is weak. Much of the company's lip service around caring about people and the planet is for marketing value and little else. When COVID-19 hit, Hipcamp decided almost immediately (early April) to cut nearly half of its staff, and now bookings are skyrocketing -- go figure. Rather than waiting a few weeks to see how the situation would pan out, the company made it clear it cares about profit above all else. This is not a values-led company. It's a company like any other, so don't expect much beyond that. Plus: be prepared for plenty of micro-aggressions and little in the way of support if you're a person of color.

Pros

Hipcash getting people outside great investors (was a cool office space) democratized open data great coworkers campouts fair compensation

Cons

CEO is aggressive towards employees in an unhealthy way. Seen her verbally attack others, quick to cut them off, and plays favorites. Without going into details, the CEO is one of the companies greatest employee assets and also its biggest obstacle. trying to do too much with too little resources expected to work pretty ridiculous hours in general different rules for different people. Friend of the CEO or being there early gets all the favoritism shortsighted doesn't listen to the experts in the chair but rather outsources ideas this business has tight margins

Special place with the expected growing pains

Pros

Working for a company that's genuinely trying to make the world a better place and connect more people to nature. Creating economic opportunities for small business owners, farmers, and landowners. Helping facilitate really wonderful experiences for people from all over the world. Getting to work with incredibly smart, fun, dynamic people who are continually learning from and respect each other. Treated like adults who can meet goals, integrate our work & personal lives, and manage our days. Other perks: beautiful, dog-friendly workplace, discounts on Hipcamp stays, stocked lunch, fun company outings.

Cons

The typical growing pains you see at lots of early, growth-stage startups. We need to remember that while we're growing rapidly, we should constantly prioritize creating and adhering to systems that will support internal culture and career growth. Growth at any cost is antithetical to who we are.
