Pros

Hirata makes wonderful custom manufacturing equipment used in many industries, from tire manufacturing to flat panel displays to back end assembly/test equipment. The projects can often be interesting and challenging.

Cons

Complete lack of trust between Japan and US. US employees are considered temporary and expendable. Rampant politics. Pay is below market and general employee population is of mediocre talent and drive. US leadership on assignment from Japan lacks management depth and leadership. Human resources is inexperienced and unqualified, focusing on monitoring and restricting employees rather than finding, retaining, and nurturing talent. Accounting is penny wise and pound foolish, disallowing a simple dry cleaning bill on an extended trip but allowing undocumented customer entertainment expenses up to $500/night. Employees are given little direction and performance evaluations are a sham.

Great advice to management - in 2019 this restructuring occurred. Management is held accountable for their team, team members are held accountable, budgets and projects are watched monthly. Success is inevitable.

The worst company I have ever worked for

Pros

Employees! These people are the lifeblood of this company. They accomplish so much with so little.

Cons

I can’t understand how the employees get anything done at Hirata. The accounting system is worthless. Project cost tracking and financial accuracy are nonexistent. Executive management is just a bunch of puppets incapable of coming up with a singe original idea. They hold mid level employees and management accountable for impossible goals but they continue to mismanage the company into financial chaos. No raises in two years and no bonuses either. No explanations given the employees about when or if they will receive bonuses or raises. One town hall meeting per year where the executive team speaks incoherently about company pipe dreams but provides nothing of substance. Hirata is a big black hole. Run far, run fast.

Hirata had a management change in 2019, since the change they have paid above average bonuses every year and annual increases. Quarterly town hall meeting are held to allow open communication with team members. Culturally, adding the Sunshine events, restructuring the organization and becoming a more cohesive management team has allowed the organization to work smarter. Our team members are our greatest asset and we show our appreciation to them in many ways. The Hirata of 2018 is not the Hirata of 2022 and beyond.

Where is the leadership?

Pros

There is profit sharing at the end of the year.

Cons

I accrued a significant amount of comp time and upon my termination was informed that it would not be paid out. Too bad I didn't wait until the end of the year to take the payout like what is normally offered. USA Leadership is in a constant state of bickering with Japan and amongst themselves. Nothing more than a high school power struggle. If you work longer than 8 hours during any day monday through friday you do not get any comp time because monday through friday are normal working days. Even if you work 24 hours straight and pull a 75 hour week you are not compensated at all for your extra time. Comp time is only earned for weekends and holidays that are worked. Scheduling of resources was more reactive than proactive. Confucius says, "Wheel that squeaks loudest gets greased first." Planning of field work without fully understanding the issue and scope of work is common place.
