Horrible place to work at

Pros

You can take the train to work (also a huge con bc they don't even give you the funds to pay for your transportation)

Cons

The workplace is disorganized, with insufficient staffing and inadequate oversight of educators, including a lack of background and social media checks. Management frequently shifts blame onto the staff rather than addressing systemic issues. The museum often operates with minimal crew, creating challenges for employees. The education department is frequently absent when needed, leading to chaotic situations, including escalations with difficult or even combative visitors. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding discriminatory behavior from someone in the marketing department. Super high turnover due to these issues that have been happening for years since some of the full-time staff has been there, Very mediocre.

Don’t Waste Your Time

Pros

I learned a lot about Miami’s history. I also learned what not to do.

Cons

The organization is all around a horrible place to work. I was there for a very short time and witnessed multiple people of all levels go to “HR” and the president about issues that could result in legal repercussions. I’ve witnessed people going to my supervisor asking them to help, and when they reported the concern they told them to live with it. Tons of inappropriate comments were made and nobody protected the people filing complaints. Eventually, the talented employees that had major issues left. The organization hires people who don’t have management experience, and as a result have a high turnover rate. Working here, although brief, was a waste of my time. From a value standpoint, I don’t agree with the manner in which they conduct business and how they treat their employees.

Important Mission Undermined by Poor Leadership

Pros

The museum’s mission—to preserve and share Miami’s rich history—is meaningful and important. The work itself can be fulfilling, and the museum has great potential as a cultural institution.

Cons

Unfortunately, the internal work environment does not reflect the quality of the museum’s public-facing mission. In my professional experience—including retail and food service—this was the most disorganized and disappointing workplace I’ve encountered. There is no formal HR department, which allows unprofessional behavior and workplace bullying to persist unchecked. The executive team tends to deflect responsibility rather than take constructive action. Discriminatory behavior, particularly within the marketing team leadership, was observed and is deeply concerning. The executive leadership, in my view, lacks the experience and professionalism required to manage staff and steer the institution effectively. Without meaningful changes at the top, I worry about the museum’s long-term sustainability.
