Pros

So fast-paced you forget all your troubles for a while. Friendly, hardworking co-workers! But they all quit. They offer health care and even pay a portion of it - but it still adds up to about $200 bi-weekly. Free dessert??

Cons

This company is not interested in retention and has a very sketchy, indeterminable promotional system. Nepotism. VERY anti-union and anti-workers rights. Employees are not allowed to meet with management in a group under any circumstances. If you have an issue, a concern, or a solution to an ongoing problem, it will NEVER be addressed. The current system relies on people quitting rather than going through the work of fixing problems.

Pros

For me, it was a walking distance from home.

Cons

The two owners are new to food service and undervalue labor when it should be the most valuable assets to them as they can not maintain any of the stations they expect their employees to know how to do. They consistently put staff in the position to run around when understaffed rather than close an hour early or shut down coffee. After voicing concerns about their lax COVID policies, they dismissed me. They will put the comfort of the customers over the safety of the staff. The nepotism rings loud at Hot Cakes as their son is a store manager. The last straw for me was when I requested to cut my hours by 4 hours and they told me either I worked 40 hours or 15 hours with a position demotion and pay cut. “That’s just what the business needs” was the reason they gave for the outrageous counter offer. This company is VERY out of touch with their business. Being honest and staying true.

Pros

The cakes and other menu items are very good, there are a variety of FOH roles (some are minimal customer interaction), my store manager was really flexible (but sadly left due to low pay), coworkers were incredible! Great environment for the most part.

Cons

Management consistently breaks employment and safety laws (doesn’t always give 30 min breaks for shifts that are 5+ hours, plenty of dangerous facility issues that they don’t care to fix.) Additionally, they are not at all open to feedback and actively target employees who share concerns. After advocating for a safer workspace for our queer employees, the whole staff received a text stating we would no longer be employed if we didn’t respond within 30 minutes—YIKES!
