Worst mistake of my career

Pros

Beautiful location, that's about it.

Cons

Awful senior management team. Disrespectful, aggressive, with no aptitude or desire to engage with their teams. Effectively a sweat shop for books - school leavers who are overworked and underpaid. I hated everything about it. I am not sure a new CEO will be able to effect the dramatic cultural change required within the senior management team, in order to create a better place to work for the team.

Pros

Nice location and mostly lovely staff

Cons

Badly managed by unqualified ‘creatives’ who have no design training but are leading teams of talented designers. I experienced the worst bullying in my career here and was told by HR that the reason they loved their job was because (and I quote) “ I love gossip”. If the couple of bad seeds here were removed then it would be a much better place to work as the majority of the people here are lovely. They employ school leavers as they’re cheap and won’t challenge decisions made. Poorly paid and no chance to progress in the company. Bonnier books seem a genuinely good company and it’s a shame they haven’t found out about the terrible way Igloo have treated their staff.

Igloo Books Response

I'm sorry you had a poor experience with Igloo Books. I do need to comment on some of your statements though as they are factually incorrect. Firstly, during my tenure (3 years) we have never had a role of Publishing Assistant. Secondly, there has never been an official complaint made of bullying. Thirdly, our managers in publishing have qualifications that make them adept at managing both the design and editorial teams. We don't have a policy of employing school leavers and have no staff below 18 years of age. In fact, with all our junior employees in Publishing we have an active mentoring programme and I personally encourage all staff to speak their mind without fear that their comments will be unappreciated. I would like to talk more so I can learn about your experience. Please contact me on paul.gregory@bonnierbooks.co.uk
