The referral system has done a lot worse to the company than good. People referred their relatives, family members of their friends who can only serve as the ears of managers and not truly fulfil the technical area they are recruited for,particularly in call based supports\services. As long as you can go out for a smoke with your manager and give information about who is saying and doing what and tune to your manager's opinion without expecting any technical or work-related guidance, you can get a hike and some promotions.
