Great staff, terrible management

Pros

Solid training opportunities, meaningful work, AMAZING staff that become a lifeline for one another, coworkers who are truly passionate about the work, great name recognition for when you inevitably leave, surprisingly good work-life balance.

Cons

The management became atrocious after the long time Executive Director (Lucy) left, leading the organization into a rapid decline. They engaged in union busting and retaliation towards unionizing staff, played favourites amongst the teams (which is why you’ll notice vast differences in reviews), and ignored numerous reports of harassment and bullying by supervisors across at least three separate teams. The staff is lacking in diversity and there is no push to correct this. Most of the POC are in supportive and severely underpaid positions, whereas the counsellors are mostly white women. Although work-life balance is good, the actual workload is unreasonable for many teams, even by social work standards. Inequitable treatment of staff in terms of permanent positions and pay (for example, staff hired for the same position and at the same time, some on contract and/or for a lower pay, some as permanent and/or higher pay, despite having similar experience and the same job description). Occasionally staff were pressured or even directed to act unethically when it benefitted the organization (for example, to improve program numbers).

Not Good

Pros

Good frontline substance use-related work experience

Cons

Low pay, high work load Documentation Demoralizing Very little diversity in staff (age, race, etc.)- all white women. the only time aboriginal staff are hired is if being aboriginal is a requirement of the job Pretend to be 'anti-oppressive' and talk the talk, but do not walk the walk- promote very Western white values and respectability politics Not enough self-critique and reflection Do not address toxic and abusive management behaviour
