No flexibility, no career progression, no staff investment

Pros

The only saving grace is the lovely bunch of fun people who stick it out there. Oh, and the staff parties are pretty good.

Cons

If you want to work for a business that is a dictatorship, with no flexibility, no career progression and job instability - then this is the place for you! I had the impression that Joseph Joseph would be a cool, innovative company as their products would suggest, how wrong I was! Expect to have to work your bum off pulling long hours within an under-resourced team with no recognition. It’s all a numbers game at JJ with no care for the development or wellbeing of staff members which just breeds an environment of demoralisation and demotivation. This is heightened by the fact that there is a tendency to recruit from outside rather than promoting more-than capable people within. Your career is likely to stagnate within this business rather than develop. Ultimately, this all boils down to the fact that the founders cannot trust their stuff and feel the need to micromanage heads of department. Eyes will be watching you as you come in in the morning and how long you take for lunch. Working from home isn’t a concept at JJ and neither is flexi-time. The attrition rate is 42% but despite this, no attempts are made to overcome this eye-watering high turnover rate. Those who try to introduce a change in culture and the environment (be prepared to sit in silence whilst you work) are shoved out because the founders/board members are so resistant to change. The way to survive at JJ? Be a yes man. Opposing views will not survive. Still considering a position there? My advice would be to push hard for extra money and responsibilities/title now as you basically won’t get anywhere once in the business! Also, make sure you demand certain benefits when you join as nothing will be given once you’ve started. Also, beware of reviews posted on here as certain members of staff were asked to write reviews on here to counteract the negativity.

Pros

Honestly cannot think of any pros.

Cons

I’ve worked at some tough places with demanding leadership but the camaraderie between teams has been strong and you work together. Joseph Joseph is not like that. Not only is it full of demanding managers who bulldoze their ideas through despite a lack of strategy, planning, logic, expertise and teamwork but also every department is pitted against each other so the atmosphere in head office is absolutely unbearable. It’s so bad that you could hear a pin drop in the office, no one speaks. Not to mention the horrendous misogyny and lack of diversity in the culture. It’s just so horrendous there. All issues, with specific details, were flagged to the ‘culture’ team numerous times, flagged to various managers and to the director but no action taken. Instead, the office is a revolving door of talented people who leave after a year. Recruitment companies are aware of how awful the culture is. The positive reviews on glassdoor are fake, you can tell as they directly reference a previous negative review and they’ve tried to spin it. Don’t waste your life by working here.

Terrible company, terrible pay, worse professional decision of my life

Pros

I have to enter 5 words minimum. Having said that some people are cool and friendly but see below for overall vibe.

Cons

By far the worst company I've ever had the misfortune to work for, and I've worked for a company where I took time off because i was suicidal. I will never work for them again, nor buy their poorly designed and produced products. There was a clear divide between the two floors with departments pitted against each other and virtually no collaboration or communication whatsoever. It's essentially the upstairs design team and everyone else. Employees are expected to work long hours for low pay (compared to industry standards, at least in my industry), limited support and poor management. Senior management given promotions to the board and payrises but us ordinary employees, who do all the work, are expected to work for barely any payrise. Morale was at a serious low with many people privately voicing their frustrations. Don't believe me? Look at how many people they're hiring, look at the roles. People left en masse and why i left. There's no desire to change because it's clear who the favourites are in the company and everyone else is just there to provide support to the design team, with the assumption that they can be replaced. There's talk of corporate bullying with some employees leaving due to verbal (both written and in person) abuse from some members of senior management but everyone is too afraid to report them. Though, rumours are very strong and widespread and have heard of at least 3 people leaving because of it, so how the CEO and HR don't know is surprising. Either they don't know or they're turning a blind eye to it, but are just as bad as each other. There's zero attempt to be more sustainable. They created a sustainability team, who have done nothing since it was formed. The design team regularly throw away samples and there's times where they hire an entire truck to throw things away... Dozens of perfectly good and functioning products straight to landfill. I wasn't sure they were good at first until I see the favourites (design team) taking their pick of products, rather than it going to sample sale or even to charity! If the company paid my rent, my flatmates' rents, doubled my current salary and paid for my holidays for the next 20 years, I would not say yes to coming back. Nothing is worth the mental anxiety, stress, and depression I've suffered here. If you're considering working here, don't. Even if you don't believe me fully then at the very least err on the caution side because it's not worth the risk of whatever comfy job you might have. I regret the time I've spent here and it's one of the worst professional decisions I've ever made.
