Pros

I literally can not think of a positive for this company.

Cons

The management team is pitiful. Joyent is completely controlled by a team within Samsung. The Joyent leadership team is not allowed to make decisions. This includes technology selections, project priorities and hiring. Instead, almost all decisions are made by very incompetent Samsung employee's that feel they are smarter than everyone at Joyent. I personally have never been treated this poorly in my life. This Samsung team is a group of nasty, mean, lying and back stabbing people. The "Samsung Way" is to try not to be directly responsible for anything and then just to blame others. The culture is completely broken at this company. Hands down the worst company I have ever worked for. If you are thinking of working here, don't do it. If the Samsung team doesn't like you, they won't fire you. They will just make your life miserable until you quit.

Pros

My peers at Joyent are good to work with.

Cons

The list of con’s is so long, I can’t list them all here. Since Joyent is owned by Samsung, the company is ran by an outside group of “Managers” from Samsung. They treat the Joyent employee’s as below them. Extremely disrespectful. The Samsung Management team is horrible. Their top priority is to push blame off on others and they will lie as needed to make that happen. The Samsung team changes our development road map every couple of weeks. Their management style is to simple demand more than any team can do and then blame the team for failing. Run from this company. Do not work here.

Pros

At Joyent you will learn the real meaning of "full stack". The company works on problems that range from low level kernel improvements to API design specifications. This is thanks to the industry they are in, and the brilliant talent you can find across the engineering organization.

Cons

The engineering organization is a flat structure where there are no engineering managers or technical leads. Even though they have implemented some review processes for proposing features and changes, you will have a hard time winning technical arguments if you want your voice heard. Prepare to be shut down by the CTO many times if you're willing to fight for change. There's no culture of empowering people, it's all about being the smartest person in the room. The environment can be really hard to manage if you are shy and non-confrontational person, like many in the company are. This creates a situation where people give up, stop trying and lose motivation to work on new things.
