Great Org, Terrible Job

Pros

Lesbians Who Tech (and Tech Jobs Tour) do needed work in the tech industry to boost diversity recruitment.

Cons

Highly dysfunctional leadership and management, lack of organizational structure, lack of HR and/or internal review processes, highly problematic boundary issues between leadership and staff, overall tone of mistrust from leadership, high value on results over people (at whatever cost). Inappropriate "carrot dangling" to motivate higher productivity, without follow-through (ex: if you can just give us 120% these next two weeks, we think you have a lot of potential and will move up). Extremely high turn-over (longest lasting program staff member - 1 year). Leadership/CEO talks negatively about former employees to current staff. I came to Lesbians Who Tech (LWT) after being recruited out of a large Fortune 500 tech company - for as hard as I was chased, I had high hopes, especially as a queer-identified person. I was deeply (and quickly) disappointed by my experience with LWT, and made the decision to resign because of general mistreatment and hostile management. Bottom line: If you want to be treated with respect, do not work here. If you want to be mentored and/or are looking for managers to help you develop professionally, do not work here. If you want to be home more than you are traveling, do not work here. If you have a personal life that you actually care about, do not work here. If you want to be paid a reasonable salary for working 60+ hours/week, do not work here.

High staff turnover for a reason

Pros

The LWT community is great. The experience as an employee... no so much.

Cons

False sense of urgency for every task which lead to burnout, inappropriate blurring of work/life boundaries, leadership would talk about supporting BIPOC communities, and then not pay their BIPOC speakers. Leadership did not walk the talk. CEO earned a reputation for yelling at staff.

Hustle life, Career Growth and Best Squad

Pros

Opportunity to grow, learn and expand your skill set - business development, data, social, branding. If you excel taking an idea and 25% of the information and running with it - you’ll fit right in. All voices on the team are at the table to strategize and to give input on projects. Your idea may become the next big project. You must love events, its all hands in to create the most diverse and inclusive tech conference in the world - have to be about that #SQUADLIFE. Ability to travel and connect with folks doing the most innovative work in the tech and D+I space. Mission-driven on all brands and to be your best here, you have to be aligned. The very best part about this org is the people within it.

Cons

Start up hustle life is fast-paced. Shifting priorities can lead to comms not being as clear when things are moving quickly. You may not always feel like you have all the information you need to complete the work, so finding the right balance between asking questions and filling the blanks can be hard. Culture is still a work in progress (bonus if you’re invested in helping to build + grow it).
