Federal Charge for Retaliation and Religious and Disability Discrimination
Pros
I enjoyed my media collaborations with MAP’s field partners.
Cons
After recognizing the credibility of my claims, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a federal charge for retaliation, religious discrimination, and disability discrimination against MAP International. My tenure at MAP was marred by persistent and egregious misconduct, as I encountered widespread unethical and illegal behavior. The unethical and illegal behavior at MAP includes: 1. Religious Discrimination: Bigotry and Forced Religious Practices: As a Buddhist, I faced hostile treatment and forced participation in Christian religious practices, including being forced to lead Christian prayers against my will. Also, on my first day of employment, while eating lunch at a Thai restaurant, MAP leadership made bigoted comments against Buddhists, mocking my religion as “like believing in Santa Claus, weird, and delusional,” and then loudly laughed. *** 2. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Violations: The organization failed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by neglecting to make its website accessible for individuals with visual impairments, despite my multiple offers to address this issue. This was a clear-cut legal violation, and MAP leadership repeatedly ignored my concerns about it — and I endured retaliation after expressing these concerns (see below). *** 3. Racially Inappropriate and Dishonest Photo Practices: MAP engaged in racially inappropriate practices by using photos of black children from different countries misrepresented as being from specific regions, misleading donors and partners. (Such as using black children from Chad in reports about Sierra Leone and Haiti) *** 4. Retaliation: Cut Off My Website Access After Reporting Illegal Behavior: After reporting unethical and illegal practices to HR, I faced retaliation, including a manager cutting off my website access for three days, which severely impacted my ability to work and caused significant emotional distress and health problems. *** 5. Disability Discrimination: Ignoring Health Concerns: In addition to the website ADA violations, I experienced discrimination related to my own health ailments — caused by the hostile work environment, including the retaliation I faced after reporting illegal misconduct to HR. MAP leadership repeatedly ignored my pleas for help about my health issues. I even provided a letter from my doctor verifying that my health problems were a direct result of MAP's actions, but this too was ignored. Considering that MAP is a global health organization that solicits money from donors under the pretense of caring for "all people," their neglect of their own employee's health and well-being is particularly hypocritical. *** 6. Deceptive Communications and False Claims to Donors and Partners: Communications from MAP International’s leadership, including the CEO, had fake AI-generated quotes, misleading donors and partners about the organization’s transparency and values. The CEO rarely reviewed these communications falsely attributed to him, as they were supplied by other staff. One of these fake AI-generated quotes supplied by other staff hypocritically and absurdly bragged about MAP's commitment to transparency. I was also forced to write a heartfelt, personal letter from the CEO to donors without any input or review from the CEO himself. *** 7. Misuse of Donor Funds and Chronic Negligence: The organization exhibited chronic negligence and dysfunction, which undermined its credibility and effectiveness in using donor funds. This includes sending a shipment to the wrong country, mishandling sensitive issues, ignoring emails and deadlines, allocating considerable resources to projects without completing them, and spending time and money on leisure activities instead of programs during expensive international trips. *** 9. Penalized for Falsely Inflating the Value of Donations: MAP was previously penalized by the California Department of Justice for falsely inflating the value of its gift-in-kind (GIK) medicine donations from pharmaceutical companies in communications to donors and partners. This penalty still affects MAP, such as Facebook banning it from using the fundraising app to raise funds from donors. *** 10. Retaliatory Termination: The culmination of MAP International’s unethical and illegal practices was my retaliatory termination. Despite receiving positive feedback on my work and being recognized as a valuable asset to the team ("best writing and videos ever created at MAP"; heralded as a “gift to MAP”), I was terminated under the pretext of “fit” — a clear guise for retaliation. The retaliatory termination followed my repeated expressions of concerns about unethical and illegal behavior, including bigotry, forced religious practices, discriminatory treatment, deceptive communications, ADA violations, and racially inappropriate photo practices. Also, the termination occurred shortly after I stated my intent to report this misconduct to government agencies (DOJ/IRS/EEOC). Furthermore, the termination was executed by the same leadership involved in the misconduct, and the official reason provided was dishonest and misleading. This termination was blatant retaliation after I voiced my valid and evidence-backed concerns about MAP’s unethical and illegal behavior, and stated my intent to report it to government agencies. Because of this widespread unethical and illegal behavior, there is now a federal charge against MAP with the EEOC for retaliation, religious discrimination, and disability discrimination.
