I have been working at Macfarlanes full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The average quality of the lawyers is very high and there are very few people you wouldn't want to be stuck working with.

    Cons

Most of the senior partners are very cold and insensitive because they are under a lot of pressure to perform themselves.

I worked at Macfarlanes full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - interesting work - exposure to good training resources

    Cons

    - stuffy and they hire a particular “type” or “breed” of trainee so likely to lack change in the general composition and diversity within the firm - dated and old fashioned - lack of diversity (BAME) at higher levels - low pay/below market

I worked at Macfarlanes full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great training, especially on the unstructured side and as a trainee. There is a culture of feedback, with partners taking the time to explain their amendments to help you develop further. This lends itself to a strong reputation within the legal industry which does no harm to your career prospects. The firm became more progressive during the time I was there, moving from words to action. This has not yet manifested itself with a more diverse partnership, but the culture has definitely evolved to become more inclusive in general. Initiatives such as Culture Club (monthly talks from interesting non-legal speakers, social events such as the Robbie Burns supper, etc.) and a smart casual dress code unless meeting clients help make Macs a good place to work.

    Cons

Hours are long, especially in transactional departments like M&A, Funds, Banking, etc. Do your research before joining - people who join a transactional team from a MC firm expecting reduced hours are invariably disappointed. Some departments are more crusty than others (e.g. Private Client). The people here are still nice - just a little more old school than elsewhere in the firm.
