I have been working at Manulife full-time

    Pros

Being a seasoned risk management professional, Manulife provides plenty challenging problems for us to tackle. The company culture is also fairly merit based and original ideas are encouraged.

    Cons

The pace is slower, which is expected being the largest player on the buy side. As a result, promotions also happen at a slower pace. The dominant problem solving methodology is actuarial based, which tend to ride a long term trend but less sensitive to short term dynamics. Financial derivatives is still a niche area, and risk professionals in this area are yet to be highly valued.

    Advice to Management

With the expansion of the business way beyond traditional insurance, financial derivatives, as critical tools in risk management, should receive a higher profile both in terms of adequate staffing (not headcounts but caliber) and compensation.

I worked at Manulife full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Excellent Work/Life Balance
    - Great opportunities to learn
    - Pay is very reasonable, great benefits

    Cons

    - Lots of politics, direction is sometimes not very clear
    - Big company, takes a lot of times to get things done

    Advice to Management

    - Rather than focus on taking time to make sure the direction is right, listening to the staff working in the trenches would help the overall strategy more clear

I worked at Manulife full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Great benefits and work life balance.
    2. Some areas have changed a lot in terms of how they work and they are more open

    Cons

    1. Incredibly resistant to change- Not an open culture when it comes to new ideas or different ways of doing things. A lot of management is stuck in their old ways and refuses to change.

    2. Pay raises and promotions are difficult to get when you're not in a management position

    3. Seniority is valued over what someone brings to the table

    Advice to Management

Cut the old processes and the people in management who don't want to change. Just because you've done something a certain way for so many years, doesn't means that there's no longer a better way to do it. Without an open culture, it will be difficult to retain the younger generation of employees.
