Pros

Only work here if you want to return to the 1950's

Cons

Everything. This place is the most narrow minded place I have ever worked.

Pros

You will definitely appreciate the next district you work at....or ANY other job you have done before!

Cons

This place is an absolute mess. Technology: You will be given a laptop and smart board. That's it. Students have zero access to technology in the classroom. Textbooks: Either they don't exist because the district has converted to a digital curriculum or the books you do have are outdated/covered in male genitalia graffiti/missing pages. Curriculum: Great programs, but forget using school resources to print worksheets or notes. You will need to provide your own printer, ink/toner, and paper because it is EXTREMELY rare for all three of those to be available at the same time. Student licenses to curriculum do not exist either. Materials: You will never get a budget. If you make a request it probably will not get approved. If it does, it will be months before you get approval...and by then you will have already bought the materials yourself and probably had them stolen. Be prepared to spend thousands of dollars of your own money if you want to adequately teach your students. Relief: Substitutes are also rarely available- if you actually get one they will most likely be high on something. More than likely your class will be sent to another teacher's classroom where they will have too many students to properly teach their own class...let alone make sure that your students complete the work you prepared for them. This will happen when you are out on school business and will also happen to you when other teachers are out. Your safety and the students' safety will most likely be in question. School Trips: Be prepared to let students down because administration either will not pay for registration fees on time or allocate resources appropriately. You will spend numerous out of contract hours training teams or having after school practices to only be told at the last minute that there is no money available for your trip or when you call to verify that everything is registered/paid for- you find out that the deadline passed by the time they received payment and you are no longer eligible to participate. Students will lose interest and no longer trust you. Co-Workers: Turnover is extremely high, several teachers will not even make it through the first semester. Those that do make it will exhaust you with their complaining. Most are here for summers and holidays off- definitely not to actually teach. Discipline: Go ahead and document incidents and/or make referrals- there is no guarantee that they will be followed up on. Try to call or email guardians- you may actually get in touch with someone, but don't expect them to be on the same page as you. Is the star quarterback in your class failing and refusing to do work? Let the coaches know what is going on in an effort to get support. You will be asked to change their grade to passing. Half of your students will either be in ISS or in DAEP (Disciplinary Alternative Education Program). Neither of these programs are actually a success with correcting behavior. Students have no pride in the school or themselves. Cleaning graffiti off of your furniture and walls will be a daily chore. Fights are frequent. Sex in the hallways happen. Students will challenge you and/or cuss you. Facilities: The schools are filthy, trash is everywhere outside, desks and chairs are broken, water fountains are in disrepair, bathrooms are "closed", labs are being used as storage areas rendering them useless for education.
