Toxic work environment (would give this company 1/2 star if I could)

Pros

- Close to bus stop - On-site cafeteria (very small, though) with coffee - (pro & con) — The CEO offers tickets to concerts/games occasionally (you'll have to suck up to his assistant, though)

Cons

- Gossipy staff - Incompetent & unorganised HR person that micromanages and inserts herself into other departments business (which isn't part of her HR duties). She also convinces you to work as a CSR when you interviewed for a completely different position — and when you ask to do the job you originally applied/interviewed for... she tells you everyone has to be a CSR first (which she 'conveniently' left out of the interview). I never fully committed to the CSR position, I only told her I'd be willing to try it, when I tried to get the original position I had applied for she told me it had been filled (a blatant lie). That company is way too small and gossipy for me not to have known about that. - Most staff are either related or married and work in the same departments (HUGE conflict of interest and should never be allowed) — also one of the reasons so much gossip is occurring. I was warned repeatedly my first week to be careful of what I said around anyone. I was always tense around everyone and felt like I couldn't trust anyone. - Low pay for the amount of work expected - Huge turnover rate - Fewer vacation days offered compared to other companies - Constant micromanaging among supervisors/managers. They often listen in on CSR's live phone calls instead of listening to recordings, and then call the CSR immediately after the call ends to critique them and point out everything they did wrong. - The HR person took me around the building and made a joke about someone "scaring me off" in one of the other departments. Two women were so appalled by her joke and started gossiping about the HR person and how she shouldn't be saying something like that to a new hire. Their extreme overreaction scared me off way more than her joke. While I didn't care for the HR person at all, the way they responded to her joke by gossiping and being so uptight made me feel like this was definitely not a company for me. If they reacted so harshly and obnoxiously over a small innocent joke... what are they like over work-related issues?? - Expected to remember far too much, way too quickly. People aren't robots. - The CEO is very uninvolved in his company and is only in Canada during summer months. He should step aside and let someone else run the company who will be more involved and make better changes for their employees. - Very outdated computer operating system. Almost nothing is done electronically (the CEO is elderly and afraid of doing anything on the computer) and what little is, is very outdated and not at all user-friendly. - It was very obvious most employees there hated their jobs, they looked miserable and weren't very friendly or talkative (I don't blame them). Some of the older staff don't even make an effort at all to talk to anyone except their friends/spouses. - From what I heard, it is extremely difficult to get a raise (you'll have to ask multiple times over a year or more... and even then it's not a guarantee). - There doesn't seem to be much room for growth in this company. Especially since many employees are related to each other, their relatives are likely to get raises/promotions over outsiders. - Overall, this company is very toxic and not welcoming of outsiders. Steer clear of this one!
