Pros

Most staff members were friendly. Staff get leftovers of the nice refreshments provided for board members. Human Resources person makes the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever eaten.

Cons

Harasses employees involved with union. Violates Americans with Disabilities Act. Unfair compensation practices. Managers and human resources have no clue about what motivates workers; they rule by intimidation. Unfair promotion practices. Management jobs are usually not posted. Managers are selected based on how much they suck up to administration and other managers; qualifications are of no consequence. Arbitrary handling of requests for time off. Honest exchange of ideas is not permitted--even managers seemed afraid to voice their opinions. Frequent "release" of probationary employees.

Could Be A Gem If People Wanted It

Pros

Nice coworkers who genuinely are good people and will care about you as long as you put the effort into getting to know them. Can develop decent base of knowledge about basic building repairs due to buildings department being first line of responsibility for building issues. Work flow is varied enough that it never becomes too dull.

Cons

Union can be more of a pain than worth at times. Employee conflicts tend to linger due to occasional workplace favoritism or lack of conflict management. Had to walk on eggshells around patrons, as high management would rarely take sides with employees in employee-patron conflict. Near end of tenure, departmental and workplace morale was low due to unpopular administration decisions from new director.

Pros

Some of the coworkers could be awesome, while others not so much--but you have that everywhere. I really enjoyed working with and serving the public; that's what brought me into the field to begin with. Also, the overall atmosphere wasn't the best when I began, but it had improved greatly by the time I left.

Cons

The scheduling took me some time to get used to. Additionally, as previously mentioned, some of the coworkers could be challenging.
