Pros

[Travel] You get to visit Tokyo and meet peers. [Dinner] There will be one dinner per week so that you can catch up and bond with your colleagues.

Cons

[Policies]: Policy is meant to be broken. This is the motto Mercari India follows. Application varies from team to team, often tailored to suit the convenience and benefits of management rather than the employees. This inconsistency undermines the credibility of the policies. [Value and Performance Metrics]: While the value and performance matrix is commendable in theory, its implementation leaves much to be desired. Performance is often gauged by superficial metrics such as the number of Slack messages sent—the more messages, the more "performing" you are. The more parties you attend the more jolly person you are. They also don’t give a damn if you work hard and keeps on performing. Critical factors like code quality and timely deliveries seem to carry little weight in evaluations. [HR Team]: The HR team often oversteps their role, behaving as though they are the boss of all Mercari India. The frequent mixing of personal and professional matters has created a toxic work environment. The HRBP exhibits strong communication skills, but a lack of professional decorum is evident in their interactions with employees. HRBP doesn’t even know the importance of position they hold, they just keep matters so casual as we are living at their mercy. [ESAT Surveys]: Conducting Employee Satisfaction (ESAT) surveys every quarter is a positive step towards gathering feedback. However, the lack of follow-up actions renders the initiative meaningless. Merely documenting action items without implementing them leads to employee frustration and a lack of trust in the process. [India Site Leadership]: The India site lead appears to lack impactful leadership and direction, leaving employees without adequate guidance or support. Site lead doesn’t even wave or greet employee back when employee says good morning. This makes us feel worthless. He just conveniently sits in one cubicle and make us feel we are working in some LALA company. In many meetings while conveying his point of view he has been so harsh and intolerant to other people’s opinion. [Appraisals]: Appraisal and promotion hike is a joke here. You will get around 2-3% every semester which is even less than inflation here in India. They can throw money like anything in party, offsite and what not but when it comes to appraisal they are the worst.

Pros

- Average salary with decent work-life balance. - Annual trips to Japan (4-5 days) for face time with Japan team members. - Good colleagues who are also trapped in this company.

Cons

- Clueless Leadership: Site lead and senior managers have no idea about actual work. Even minor concerns from Japan teams trigger panic and blame games. - Two-Faced Management: Local senior leadership only cares about maintaining their good image. Their behavior takes a complete 180-degree turn whenever Japan leaders visit India. - Toxic Work Culture: The entire system is perception-driven. Any suggestions for improvement are taken personally and used against you during performance reviews. - False Promises: Hiring pitches a great work environment and culture, but reality is different. Salary hikes are a joke (2-3% max), far from what was promised. - Forced Socializing: Office events and dinners are unofficially mandatory—skipping them leads to penalties under the so-called AllForOne value. - No Vision, No Innovation: The India team operates purely on a project basis, functioning like a typical service-based company with no long-term vision. - Unfair Evaluations: Performance reviews are a complete sham—subjective, perception-driven, and lacking continuous or actionable feedback. Pleasing your manager is the only way to secure good ratings, as they have no real understanding of work complexity or contributions. Bottom Line: If you want a fair workplace with real career growth, competent leadership, and transparent evaluations, stay far away from this company.

Unclear Policies: • The HR team lacks proper policies and consistency, often modifying rules case by case. • No clear path for employee reviews or career growth. • Policies on work-from-home (WFH) are inconsistently enforced. Some employees stay remote for months without repercussions, while others are denied WFH requests outright. 3. Lack of Learning Opportunities: • The organization offers no scope for skill development or learning initiatives. 4. Toxic Culture: • Favoritism is prevalent, with decisions often based on personal connections rather than merit. • Employees are subjected to unnecessary scrutiny and Slack group discussions if they request flexibility. 5. Lack of Leadership from the Site Lead: • The site lead shows favouritism Japan-based management while neglecting local teams. • Employees are ignored and treated poorly, while the site lead focuses on hosting VIPs with tea and samosas instead of addressing employee concerns. 7. making it a challenging environment for those who aren’t from the South or Karnataka.
