Pros

- Excellent progression opportunities within the company. - Wide variety of work from day one. - Very strong trainee cohort groups. - Extensive tutorial scheme throughout your training, from general skills to exam practice. - Good culture within offices, with many social events.

Cons

- Rotation scheme offers negligible benefit in a post-COVID world – there is existing equipment and structure to work virtually at other offices, yet management continues the need to move cities. This rotation scheme is applied as dogma; you WILL be moving to a city if management decides it. - Other firms offer better pay and benefits for trainees/associates (especially relevant with the added expense of moving between offices). - HR team is either incompetent or purposefully difficult. Poor communication and often do not adhere to written procedure. - Very high expectations for professional exams in comparison to other firms, such as (needlessly) sitting all UK finals exams as early as possible. - Poor fiscal support for exams, no expense scheme for legal texts/revision materials. - Insular culture in certain offices, Lack of unification in work culture and practices between offices. - Poor attitude towards mental health despite the new I&D scheme. - Favouritism is quite common and can make working with some partners very difficult, especially with the rotation scheme where you mostly work with one partner at a time. This leads to the “ejector seat” placements where trainees leave/get fired when working with a partner they do not get on with.

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments and rate our organisation since leaving us. We’re glad to hear you’ve enjoyed working as part of a strong cohort and comment favourably on the office culture among other positives. We appreciate also your constructive criticism which we’ll look into as part of our commitment to continuously review and improve the way we operate. Some of the comments made appear related to your individual experience so are a little difficult to action without specifics so if you wouldn’t mind sharing further detail on these it would help us to identify areas for improvement and would be highly appreciated. I’m available at Andy.Whitlock@mewburn.com I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Andy Resourcing & Talent Manager

Inconsistent training programme, hire to fire and up or out mentality

Pros

Good pay, the trainee cohort is very collegial and supportive

Cons

As someone mentioned, the training programme is very inconsistent and some partners have a reputation for having unreasonable expectations over trainees. Some partners are ejection seats for trainees and lateral hires . Some trainees are nervous to go to the bathroom or taking breaks when around partners, whilst others are demanded profitability (whatever that means) since the start (????). Engineering has a particularly bad reputation for this, so physicists/engineers: watch out! Unfortunately, your experience will highly depend on the partner you end up with. Some are very patient and care about your learning, but too many of them just give you a case and expect you to prepare "finished products" after a couple of days. It is also very clear that your personality is an important factor for them to decide to keep you or not. Since I joined another firm, these are some of the comments I got from former colleagues at Mewburn (trainees): - every day without being called into HR is a good day - we are terrified all the time - I survived my review, I got three months more to live! - it's good to keep in touch with someone from outside, in case I'll need to abandon the sinking ship - is there space in the live-saving boat? (Other firm) Trainees are thrown in the bin very easily and with very little warning or explanation. It's possible that there are over-hiring policies in place, so if that happens to you, that is not necessarily a reflection of you doing a bad job. You should realise that they might fire you within the first six months or so without much warning (except for weird meetings with HR where you get asked personal questions such as "what do your parents do?").

Pros

Excellent career prospects Good pay (average in the industry to begin with, but excellent if get to higher levels of partnership) Very fair minded people Good company spirit and direction Generally well managed Pressure to bill is not excessive Excellent training as a trainee - best in the business Hard work, but reasonable hours (9-5 or 9-6) 3 month placement abroad after 4-5 years if you do well. Very very organised. Way ahead of the curve for a patent agency. Big company so you have room to contribute in many ways, depending on your talents.

Cons

Can be very inflexible and dogmatic in terms of the way things are done They either like you or they don't - if not you won't feel comfortable High expectations - you often feel on the spot Very hard work ethic (you have to work very hard to fit in) Not a relaxed place for the above reasons...although people are very civilized and professional Hard place to train - lots of support, but also scathing reviews of your abilities, it is either sink or swim Trainees have to move offices between different cities in first three years - can be disruptive to social life
