Great employees, not-so-great c-suite

Pros

Employees are extremely intelligent, driven, and a pleasure to work with. Open workspace, nice kitchen, patio to work when it’s warm. Have you hand in a LOT of projects — room to explore other areas. Cheese boards. Ok benefits – health insurance, 401k.

Cons

Don’t expect flexibility unless you nogitiated it into your contract very clearly. CEO is great at getting clients onboard, but an extreme narcissist. Be prepared for long hours you will not always be compensated for, having CEO yell at you/force you to take sick time among other general inappropriateness. You will be severely micromanaged by the c-suite team. Your job is very likely to change. When hired, your job description is unlikely to fit the actual work you do. Be prepared for long hours. Other general startup issues (revolving door, long hours, etc.) HR person closely related to CEO and plays spy.

Pros

This place is a hot mess don't work here - remember you were warned -

Cons

This company and my role were grossly misrepresented upon hire. It's a toss up between whether I was purposely lied to or if the owners are just delusional. One of the two owners is a textbook narcissist - not kidding - In order to feed the ego of the owner you will be treated like a child who cannot possibly make any decisions on your own including writing a simple email. There is no mutual respect here, the owner is so insecure that she regularly verbally abuses her staff in order to feel good about herself. For example, backwards compliments that leave you shaking your head saying was she trying to give praise because I just want to vomit. You must be able to read the mind of the owner and act as her personal assistant regardless of your job description. She thinks she is a celebrity. There is no work life balance - think 1980's - work non stop be available 24/7 - if you get an email on Sunday at 3 am you better reply immediately - do not talk about any obligations outside work including personal health and family - even the need for sleep. Completely unrealistic expectations that continually shift.

Pros

The owners value exceptional talent and will do whatever it takes to acquire it. The CEO is very dynamic and great at drumming up new business.

Cons

As an employee, you will not get a job description or performance expectations, so it's challenging to know if you're on the right track. For new hires, on-boarding is minimal and you will not receive formal training, which leaves out a lot of the history of the owners, the company, and their high-profile clients. It's a very "learn-as-you-go" atmosphere, there are no processes, and no structure so the only way to know your progress is when they approach you because something is done incorrectly. Because they'll do whatever it takes to acquire new talent - including paying whatever it takes - the current employees are often burdened with the company's financial woes. Employees often have to figure things out on their own so expect to work at least 50-60 hours per week. It's a start-up company so there's no 401k and the health insurance is costly compared to its coverage. Turn-over rate is extremely high. Had I known this going into the interview, I would have thought twice.
