Great idea but poor execution

Pros

The idea of helping multiple non-profit organizations is a noble and wonderful idea. To help non-profit organizations with their accounting so they themselves can just deal with their mission is fantastic. It's what drew me to Missionwell.

Cons

Even though I was excited to join Missionwell and the mission that's stated on their website, I was quickly discouraged within my first few weeks there. I found that the team didn't have seasoned accountants. There was one experienced Controller type person. Everyone else like a strong bookkeeper who was following task orders. The founder is frequently very moody, controlling, and condescending. She forgets about commitments she makes and then unfairly blames other people. She comes across as a kind person but speaks behind people's back. I didn't get to experience it too much because I didn't stay long, but I saw how she would get negative information from one employee about another regularly. The passive aggressive culture of the leadership is stifling and suffocating. The office is in an old apartment building that's had its walls knocked out to create a make shift open office space. The stairs are rickety and dangerous, so be careful when you're walking up or down those stairs for an interview. Parking is first come/first serve for like the first 5 people. The other 10 employees need to find parking wherever they can on the streets. I still keep in touch with a couple of people there and found out that the entire team of HR consultants left the company almost all at once. That can't be a good sign. The benefits are somewhat laughable. The health insurance is below average for what's being offered out there by others. The pay is average I'd say. But that's about where the perks stop.

Pros

Great staff and team atmosphere--everyone is willing to help each other.

Cons

Where to begin? The owner has no experience with accounting yet tries to implement best practices that make no sense. In addition her lack of experience creates false expectations with the clients she has or brings in, thus putting unrealistic and unnecessary timelines and pressure on employees. No training is provided to new employees because they are already desperate for bodies to take over the workload. No policies and procedures are put in place, and their systems are such a mess there is no way to tell what has been done before. While an excellent staff, most of the staff also does not come from an accounting background, so trying to decipher the work that had been done prior is mind-numbing. No effort to upgrade systems and integrate technology for more streamlined procedures--excel is the foundation of the entire company. IT system is slow old and outdated--company has no money to upgrade. Turnover is just outrageous--working with a nice team is not enough to retain employees. There is no care in taking the time to source let alone retain employees because they are just so desperate for more people to take on the workload to make sure Caryn meets her own promises and maintains her reputation. Which brings me to probably the worst aspect of the company is Caryn herself. She sells new employees on the fact that the environment is so family and team oriented, which was a lie from day one. She is probably the most uncaring, condescending, lying individual I have had to deal with at an upper management/owner level. Cares more about her reputation than her employees needs. I have seen/experienced her blatantly call out other employees in the middle of a meeting or a room for something that they didn't do. She overlooks communication and her emails on purpose and then turns around and blames employees for not communicating with her to cover up her own mistakes. Nobody wants to speak with her in person because she is so belittling. Claims she's such a "Christian" but that's only when it comes to those that are paying her. I'd be surprised if this company is still in existence. Nobody deserves to work here or under leadership like this.

Pros

Having worked at a few companies prior to arriving at Missionwell, I enjoyed making an impact on the workplace and the various shareholders. I always took pride in my work. What has made this a unique experience is that I know I'm making an impact on so many non-profit organizations and their individual missions. I know that if I can help one of our non-profit organization clients with their accounting so that they can focus on their mission, I am making a difference somewhere in the world. As corny as that sounds, it makes me feel good and motivates me to begin each day. The staff here is mostly new like me. It almost feels like we all came in as part of the same class of sorts. We enjoy the staff lunches and bowling outings ... we actually even enjoy the business discussions we share as we collectively try to come up with creative solutions to some interesting problems. By the way, the ongoing snacks certainly help when I get food coma after lunch. =) One other thing I see as a major pro is that everyone is given a chance to prove herself. We get new tasks and stretch assignments. As we show competency in those tasks, we are given larger assignments and room for promotions.

Cons

I wish there was more parking available, but parking on the street in front of the building isn't too bad I guess.
