Pros

There are no memorable pros worthy of killing your career

Cons

This company will ruin your career. They hire extremely bright and well qualified, young individuals by blatantly lying about what the firm does. The firm is not a consultancy - its a contractor. Monocle 'consultants' perform the most menial data tasks that no bank employee wants to perform. You will gain absolutely no transferable skills. The CEO David Buckham is an egotistical bigot, the pure definition of a megalomaniac. Senior management earn well but clearly have no ethical values, and are comfortable to steal the dreams of aspiring young professionals. Bonuses are not anywhere near promised. The whole experience leaves one disillusioned and desperately seeking a way out. If you are considering joining this firm - I plead with you to speak to as many ex employees as possible.

Monocle Solutions Response

As founder and CEO of Monocle Solutions, I am compelled to post a response to the review posted on this site on the 23rd June 2017. This "review" is an attack not only on our firm, but is also an attack on the ethics and integrity of our senior management. Further, it is an attack on me personally. The author's intention is clearly to damage the reputation of our firm as far as possible. Whilst acknowledging the excellence of our employees - the "review" calls us liars, accusing us of wilfully misleading our employees. The reviewer - who claims to be a former employee - asserts that we are a contracting firm, as opposed to a consulting firm. This is completely false: there is not a single contractor at Monocle Solutions. Each and every member of our firm is a permanent, full-time employee. The site also seems to believe we are a firm of 50 staff, whereas in fact we are 3 times that size. Whilst we recognise the value of job reviews in general, in our view, the author of the anonymous post in question, has deliberately misused this platform. Monocle provides its employees with extensive hard and soft skills training, supports and pays for all relevant further tertiary learning, provides significant cross-functional and cross-institutional experience, and substantially accelerates careers. The top management at Monocle Solutions - to a person - are there by virtue not only of their hard work and determination, but also owing to their intrinsic ethical standards. I am proud to work with, and know as friends, these remarkable people. The previous "review", published without an iota of personal responsibility, attacks these very same individuals, who have spent - for the most part - more than a decade, dedicating their working lives to this firm. Given its malicious tone and unsubstantiated, libellous accusations, the review of the 23rd of June says far more about its author than about our firm. The author goes one step too far, however. Each and every person is entitled to their own opinion, but to call me a bigot is unacceptable. These are cowardly libellous words written behind the comfort of anonymity, and abusing the true intentions of this site. It is clear that not all individuals have the personal pride required for success, ultimately depending more on the immediacy of malice, rather than the fortitude of hard work and personal integrity. I would recommend to all who would consider a career at Monocle that they speak to as many people as possible in their considerations. And I would recommend to the author of the previous "review" that they focus their attentions on the amazing and unlimited opportunities that this world has to offer, rather than on the obvious deeply ingrained negativity that possesses them. We choose to live and work positively and to build careers and to help and guide our clients. This individual must now choose his or her own way.

Pros

Extensive training programme to provide the required knowledge and skill set for the applicable projects / industry. Senior Management support and guidance. You dont get left on your own on projects but get the opputunity to work with senior staff members to assist where needed. Numerous social functions to interact with colleagues which are allocated at different firms and projects. Strong support structure to ensure that each individual is looked after. HR meets regularly with resources across different projects to get their insights; a mentor is allocated to each person which meets on a monthly basis; resources allocated to managers for guidance and support and also an exec is allocated to each operating area (who is available to meet with individually if needed). So you can be sure that if you have an issue it will be sorted out as highest priority. There is also transformation programs in place to show the company’s commitment to social responsibility and transformation both demographcally and culturally.

Cons

With training you need to complete certain items before moving to the advanced training which can take some time. But then again you need the background for the advanced items. Certain projects are quite technical which requires some progamming knowledge (but geuss thats what the training is for).

Pros

Strong emphasis on skills training. Great investment into social events to boost company morale. Company hires the cream of the crop.

Cons

Company struggles to maintain a positive working culture due to management's leadership style. Senior executives enforce a military style of leadership where consultants have to ensure they do not appear smarter than their managers before the client. Consultants are not afforded the autonomy and trust required to solve projects in their own way. What the managers say goes. The training programme is not tailored to suit our career ambitions and goals. We are all required to obtain the same certifications regardless of whether we have a technical IT background, Finance or Accounting background. If we dont obtain certifications by set period, it negatively affects our scorecard. Scorecards are currently very subjective and not standardized at all. It is purely according to your line manager's discretion .i.e two consultants can obtain the same certification and one gets a bonus while the other does not, purely on the basis that one line manager does not weigh the certification the same. We are a small company so HR has minimal power to intervene in these kinds of disputes and call senior line managers to order. Female colleagues are only afforded 1 month's paid maternity leave per year that they've worked here. Meaning you have to have been employed for 4 years to receive 4 month's paid maternity leave. Approval for annual leave is scrutinized to the nth degree. Exceeding your leave allocation by as much as a day will require line manager's approval, director's approval and if you're unlucky C-level executive approval may be required. There is minimal concession or consideration from management in this regard. Our mentorship program does not effectively assist one through the world of consulting. Mentors are not trained to be leaders and as a result the mentorship program ends up being a checklist session to ensure we are in line with the latest company policies and rules. The program should grow us in terms of soft skills, career projection and enable us to be the best consultants for the firm but this is currently not the case. The company is slacking tremendously when it comes to cultural transformation. Just have a look at our board of directors and decide for yourself. The morale is currently so low that consultants and other experienced hires do not stay for longer than 18 months in this firm. Only graduates fresh from university stay longer because they dont have any other credible work experience to get back on the job market. The company pays well if you can speak well and stand up for yourself, however, we have no benefits whatsoever.

Dear Employee We as management take each employee’s experience of our firm extremely seriously, and we are very disappointed to learn that you are not currently enjoying yours. We gather from your review that you had a negative experience with your direct line manager, specifically around your latest performance review, which we assume was negative and not in line with your expectations. We aim to always be fair and objective, and if one employee feels that this did not apply to them, we would like to learn about this and rectify the situation if needed. We have an open door policy and have always implored our employees to engage either through mentorship, your executive or HR to resolve any issues, and if this did not work, directly with the C-level execs. We pride ourselves with having a well-tailored training programme. This training programme is specifically designed to address the skills and knowledge required for our projects and add value to our clients. The training is fully funded by Monocle and the employee has the opportunity to obtain various international certifications and designations. Unfortunately, we have not received any formal complaints of this nature via any of the formal channels, including HR, therefore your anonymous comments make it impossible for us to act and resolve this matter. We still urge you to approach HR directly to air your grievances in a confidential manner. Lastly, we take transformation very seriously as can be seen in our BEE level 2 status. We are working very hard on hiring a significant number of African, Coloured and Indian candidates and developing selected African, Coloured and Indian staff through our executive acceleration plan, in order for us to promote some of our own staff into executive positions sooner. Please feel free to contact us or the Employment Equity Committee members if you would like any more information on this matter. COO
