Unfriendly Work Environment with Unclear Expectations

Pros

This company offers a decent salary and they were prompt to schedule my interview and have me start.

Cons

1. Management is not very friendly and the CEO tends to have angry outbursts. You better have thick skin. 2. I was never given any training and the expectations of my role were not made clear to me. I think the problem is that because it is family owned, many of the managers are not qualified to lead their areas. So the employees are expected to overcompensate. 3. You are not given very much time off, especially during the holidays. 4. You will be expected to do door-to-door marketing - even if you don't work in the marketing department. This was something I was never informed about before I started. 4. There is an abnormally high turnover rate.

Pros

Interview process is quite thorough (which includes a full medical exam!). It's also a small office with a collegial, "family-style" environment. Fellow co-workers are largely professional and courteous. Dress code is business casual to a point. If you somehow meet expectations, there's a possibility of getting a bonus. I also had the chance to acquire business development skills too.

Cons

Training for my position involved reading a huge binder full of information. Other than that, the entire training process didn't help me perform the job to their expectations. PTO and benefits only kick in after the first 90 days, and even then it's not easy to accrue time off (even for illness). Pay is definitely based on how much (or little) work experience you have. Work environment can be hostile at times, especially when that fury comes from senior management (as well as the failure to secure any contracts as a whole). Salary is considered exempt (as opposed to non-exempt per hour). During my time there, I observed questionable business practices and a fairly high turnover rate (especially among recent hires). Had to keep my head low to survive too. The vice president of this company holds the real power in this office to the point of micromanaging everyone (right down to time cards and emailing that person an end-of-day summary of all work completed); if you cross this person, be prepared to clear your desk.

Don't do it, not worth the stress

Pros

Money if you need it. Benefits are nice if you need them also.

Cons

When they need you you're busy, when they don't you're gone. Management doesn't give clear directions or training other than a manual they want you to read on the first day. The assign you busy work; data entry, copying, scanning, printing hundreds of forms, placing stamps on letter, but that is followed by a lot of down time. I once waited for nearly 3 hours while one of the supervisors looked for work to assign me, when I didn't have a full 8 hours of work on my time sheet he asked why some work took 4 hours. That is another thing you are expected to write down every task you do to turn it in to HR, and also email it to your supervisor. The company is a joke I am surprised cities still take their bids, but then again they work for small cities who most likely do not have a big budget to begin with.
