Poor environment, leaders are inadequate

Pros

They value cheese education, and are constantly driving for growth.

Cons

The leaders came from cheese counters - they don’t have business minds, and they are constantly making errors in judgement, that is when she isn’t manipulating you. They struggle with operations, and are very disorganized. The culture is a lot of emotional manipulation, and the expectation is that you work around the clock from 11/1-12/31 to meet their unrealistic demands. They were bought by Kroger, but have no day or day involvement outside of national sales team, so you get none of their resources or business practices. Save yourself, don’t go here.

Pros

Amazing coworkers, hard-working employees, and great products + access to cheese

Cons

Murray's might be a respected brand but the inner workings of the company are a total mess. Leadership has little to no working business experience which means that the management of departments is absolutely chaotic at best, blame culture is high, and those on the lower rungs of the employment ladder, especially in the corporate section, feel the brunt of it. The company prides itself on its "core values" (which are basically shoved down employees' throats constantly) and yet doesn't seem to actually want to invest in its people. Salaries and compensation are way below the normal level for NYC, and turnover rate is high because management would rather hire new employees at a lower pay grade than actually build a ladder of success for the current workforce. Most positions are completely thankless and have no room for upward mobility, and there's constant pressure to be taking on more or doing more with the expectation (and constant gaslighting) that you should be grateful for having the job at all. Moreover, the company's DEIA initiatives are a transparent (and too late) attempt to overcompensate for a lack of investment in diversity as well as silence on important issues. Throughout the past year, it's become clear that Murray's values optics and profit far above morals and ethics. Don't believe the positive reviews here. They're fake. This company would rather continue to push forward using archaic business strategies and rely solely on the reputation of the brand than actually invest in their people or attempt to look inward for real solutions.

Pros

The free cheese and cheese education is unparalleled. They really carry some of the best food products in the world. That education has fostered a lifelong love of food for me, and for that I'm entirely grateful. For a retail store the overall environment is much better than a national retailer or big box. We liked to joke that the employees were a little bit like our own "island of misfit toys". A lot of us were artists and musicians and it made for a very fun time behind the cheese counter. While I was there there were good opportunities for upward growth from retail stores to corporate headquarters.

Cons

I have never felt so manipulated by an employer in my life - and I used to work in the performing arts space...so that's really saying something. The CSO thinks she is God's gift to the cheese world, and she acts like the Miranda Priestly of Gouda. The "President" is far too scared of her to keep her in line, so she is allowed to run rampant across whatever business units she pleases. The difference in the way she acts with warehouse staff vs office staff vs retail staff is shocking. I've heard that she is in charge of DEI work currently and that's a laugh because I've heard her say on multiple occasions that if she could only hire women - she would. Now, yes of course we need more women in the workforce, but that's not the way to say it. She played obvious favorites, and had her emotional punching bags at the ready as well. Her behavior is what drove me, and nearly my entire department to leave the company in a 5 month span. Also - the pay rate is shocking for New York City.
