Inhibiting hierarchy and unkind culture

Pros

The coffee station is always fully stocked. There are plenty of nice receptions and events with appetizers and beverages. The office headquarters is beautiful. There can be a good work-life balance for most.

Cons

There is an extremely high degree of turnover, which leaves the company in constant disarray and lack of morale. (I saw at least 40/200 people leave the company in my 1.8 years there at the Seattle headquarters). There is a strong negative culture in which co-workers gossip and mistreat one another, as they are made to feel in competition. There is a widespread sense that supervisors are not actually empathetic to the needs or concerns of their employees. Leaders attend expensive week-long internal meetings on yachts and in four-star hotels, while telling employees there is no money for holiday parties or bonuses each year. Leaders are overwhelmingly homogeneous in age, gender and other demographic attributes. Folks with lower titles are discouraged from sharing ideas during meetings, and they are constantly talked-over when they do share them. People who try to improve processes and modes of communication are systematically alienated until they either leave or are let go for not getting with the program.

Don't judge a book by it's cover

Pros

Wonderful architecture. Brilliant minds. Opportunity to meet other great thinkers.

Cons

Administrative management is corrupted. Too much emphasis on "who you know" and "image". Not enough emphasis on rewarding hard work and protecting the integrity of your work. The relaxed work culture can be a two edged sword that also allows for gutting someone's reputation without any facts. Those with this mindset group together to achieve their goals and bully others who refuse to accept their method of "success". They parade how great they are while stabbing you in the back.

Don't Do It

Pros

-Good for building connections in Seattle's relatively small architecture community. -Lots of opportunities for large scale, corporate projects, if that's what you're into.

Cons

-Horribly misogynistic and racist atmosphere, to the point that we had to have multiple internal interventions. Not that those were productive, as the leadership was quick to turn it around and cast blame on anyone feeling victimized. Women trained as architects were told that they should focus on interiors because "women are better at picking fabric than men". Women were asked in interviews if they planned on having children soon, which is illegal. Women were discouraged from being staffed on large scale exterior projects and treated as inferiors to their male counterparts. -Leadership chose favorites which generally had nothing to do with talent or effort and everything to do with their willingness to suck up and build said leaders' egos. -High turnover, mainly due to the reasons listed above. Your portfolio won't thank you much and you'll most likely leave feeling burnt out and uninspired.
