A Good Mission with Subpar Management

Pros

-NSLC's status as a nonprofit is commendable, and attending students generally have a worthwhile experience -Cohesive team dynamics between team advisors ensure that you'll get the help you need from your coworkers if you're struggling -You supposedly learn everything you need to know on the job

Cons

-Every program is run by college students. Team advisors, assistant team advisors, the head team advisor, and program director must all be in college or must have graduated in the semester prior. The lack of experienced employees causes the whole conference to feel like it's constantly on the verge of falling apart. -Lack of clearly defined expectations can lead to miscommunications. You learn everything you must do, the night before you need to do it. That's not a sustainable way to run a summer conference. -For the amount of time spent working, employees are underpaid. Competing summer conferences pay team advisors nearly 50% more for the same amount of work. -Strong performance and commitment to the company is not recognized nor rewarded. Most advisors are not able to return after completing one session, because the company prefers to cycle in new employees.

Not A Great Fit

Pros

Fantastic networking opportunities for employees and students alike Extensive "fringe" benefits; they pay for your travel, food, University housing (Fordham and Yale for me), and admission to events like Rockefeller Plaza and a Statue of Liberty Ferry Plenty of leadership development opportunities, especially for personality ID Ability to interact with high school students and serve as an influence on them Solid foundation for future interviews and ability to demonstrate

Cons

No work life balance (working from 7AM-1AM every day of the Conference) No withholding/payroll, meaning your tax burden is twice as high (I had a $360+ tax bill, when I normally get a $200+ refund). The program duration and demands would conflict with my abilities to attend religious services Obsessive focus on dress code and tiny aspects of compliance (i.e. saving face) with blatant disregard of larger issues like employee onboarding and consistent scheduling

Pros

Amazing environment, fulfilling experience. Long hours but the community makes it worth it!

Cons

Like I said, long hours but it's completely worth it
