Pros

The low-level employees here are great - they believe in the mission of the group and it shows. There is a willingness to teach new employees that is really encouraging to people without insurance or nonprofit experience. Loved knowing that I was helping the community.

Cons

Dangerous location to work - plenty of harassment from the "local color" outside of the office. Are you a woman who wants to be harassed, shouted at, followed or grabbed by a drug-addled homeless person while walking into your office? Work here! Just don't expect management to do anything about it (talk to the city, tell people to stop loitering around the building or hire a full-time security guard). If the CEO doesn't think it's a problem, it's not a problem. Technically, you're not allowed to have any defense tools with you in the office so you get the pleasure of rape threats without the comfort of pepper spray at your side. If you complain, HR will remind you how lucky you are to work in a city where people vacation. Don't even get me started on the health insurance debacle - how an entire office full of insurance professionals can mess that up still gives me a headache. But it doesn't matter that your deductible increased by 400% because the insurance plan "is really good if you never have to use it" (the CEO actually said this). One other weird thing - there's no lunch room so you have to either eat somewhere downtown or eat at your desk. But beware - if you're eating at your desk and not working, you will get written up. I guess you could walk the 4 blocks to your car and eat if you don't want dirty looks from your manager because you're not answering your phone.

Thank you for your feedback, we are disappointed to hear you were so uncomfortable in our current location. While downtown Santa Cruz does have its characters, we have had very few official complaints of employees feeling unsafe. There is a security company we contract with who comes through and clears the parking lot and around the building in the early hours of the morning, and we have provided self-defense courses as part of our Wellness Program to encourage employee confidence and safety. We are also in the process of building a brand-new building on the west side of Santa Cruz, right in the heart of the Delaware Addition. The neighborhood is full of beautiful new restaurants, breweries and café’s, and is within walking distance to Natural Bridges Beach. There will be both indoor and outdoor areas for employees to take their breaks. We are excited to provide this new modern main office building in a beautiful part of Santa Cruz for all of our employees to experience.

Pros

Work from home; contribution to 401K whether you contribute or not

Cons

Workload, organization doesn't seem to care about their employees and the EMPLOYEES workload high deductible plan and if you have a family, the premiums will take most of your check; favoritism for managers and more senior employees; low pay for what they expect and the managers the employees have to deal with, the expectation is most definitely more than a 40 hour work week and it is an unspoken expectation to be available at all hours of the day/night Taking advantage of employees by having them perform a job for several months or years before actually getting a promotion to get the pay increase for the position, they say it is "training" but it is really because other people that do that job are overwhelmed, (as is everybody )and they don't have another position open so they can't technically promote you, which is doing nothing but taking advantage of the employees; employees seem to be just a number

Thank you for your comments and your acknowledgement of the positive benefit of working from home and our generous 401k contributions. We always encourage our employees to speak with their heads of the departments and/or HR if you have specific issues or concerns and hope since you are currently with us, you do that at any time. We also acknowledge we are a growing organization and work hard to ensure employees are engaged through the transition of growth. The organization prides itself on it's high employee retention rates and low employee turnover which we fall well below industry standards. We understand having a smaller organization that even one person exiting a department can have high workload impacts and work hard through our robust hiring process to bring in top talent from across the country in as quickly as possible. In addition, we do plan heavily for headcount as it relates to growth alone and have stayed ahead of headcount growth as it relates to growth. Unfortunately we cannot always plan for unexpected leaves of absence or an individual resignations but do have mitigating processes in place should those occur. HR prides itself on high scores of employee satisfaction annually and looks for trends in each area and addresses any and all constructive concerns. Our protocol for promotions is to always look internally first before recruiting externally and have many examples of internal promotions that have occurred just in this last year as a result of a qualified internal applicant being promoted to the next level position. Having the appropriate qualifications and experience for the position are our top priority, whether the person is internal or external. Trends are just that, a general direction in which something is changing or developing and we work hard to ensure, through innovative and proactive HR measures and initiatives such as Stay Interviews, in addition to annual surveys, to address trends that have an adverse impact to departments and individuals. We are also a small organization and hope that you feel, like a lot of our employees do, that they can simply just pick up the phone and call HR at any time to talk. Our annual survey is also designed for many opportunities for narrative comments to be written and we do analyze and address constructive comments. We encourage you to speak directly with your department head or come to HR directly at any time to discuss any individual concerns you have about your work experience on a daily basis. Thank you for being our employee.

Pros

Convenient location, great coworkers, flexible schedules, opportunity to work remotely

Cons

Completely unorganized, terrible benefits, no communication, high turnover, low pay (unless you are part of upper management- they make the big bucks), no raises, under-staffed. This used to be a good company to work for but it has changed. Morale is very very low across departments both for people that have been here a long time and newer employees. Benefits and perks have been periodically cut back in recent years. You definitely don't want to work here if you have any chronic medical/mental health conditions because the health insurance won't do a thing for you. When they limited our health insurance option to only a high deductible plan with HSA and people were upset, the CEO told everyone something along the lines of - "I've saved over 15k in my HSA over the years, this plan is totally sufficient if you take care of yourself" More like this plan is totally sufficient if your yearly income is 500k. Her statement was so shockingly obtuse it's disgusting. The leadership here clearly have no concept of (or maybe just no empathy for) what their employees might be dealing with. Company policy does not allow for raises unless you are promoted but for many people that has taken 10 years or more- and those are smart, hardworking employees that have consistently done a very good job in their work. This place is a disaster and it's depressing to have been working here for so long.

Thank you for voicing your concerns. We are sorry to hear you are having these feelings about your work experience here and as you are a current employee, I strongly encourage you to come and speak with me as Chief People Officer, directly about any and all concerns and our CEO has also expressed to me directly to please come and speak with her about your concerns. We pride ourselves on a very low overall turnover rate here and report to our Board of Directors on a regular basis our numbers that show a below industry average for both the nonprofit and insurance industries. As we communicate regularly about our challenges with our benefit options due to our size and believe our package is competitive given our variables and we do review our plan options very carefully each year with our broker. We are very proud of the fact we not only pay 100% of health premiums for our employees, we also generously provide each employee on the plan an additional $2800 annually into an HSA account to help offset healthcare costs. That money we provide as your employer is also yours to keep should you ever depart from the organization. We also do an anonymous employee satisfaction survey each year that shows our staff with a 90% overall satisfaction rate of their work experience here and hope you provided your feedback on our annual survey as well. As a small organization, all of the leadership have open door policies and are high accessible to staff for any of your concerns and again, we encourage you to come forward and speak with either myself or any of the senior leadership. On a final note, we are sorry to hear you feel depressed about working here. Good mental health is so important. While we always hate to see good employees leave the organization, we also understand when an employment relationship is no longer working for one party, sometimes it is just best to exit an organization and we support anyone who chooses to do so here as well. We encourage anyone who is feeling that way to seek alternative employment, especially if you feel its effecting your mental health.
