Think hard before working there

Pros

The staff are welcoming and work hard to do their best. Everyone is in the same sinking boat, so you don't feel selectively picked on. NOVA have a lot of training centres - some will be better than others. This review is based on one centre.

Cons

The behaviour of the learners, who come from challenging backgrounds, prevents any sensible teaching taking place. Learners are allowed to get away with causing disruption and can just refuse to do anything. Management support learners over supporting staff. The business trades on being 'an outstanding provider' - this would not be a rating, from my experiences, that could in any way be applied now. Staff turnover is extraordinarily high - if you do work there, ask other staff how long they have lasted and ask the learners what stability of staff they have had.

Awful place to work.

Pros

Hours. Close to home. Can purchase Holiday. Bank holidays off.

Cons

Management are bullies. Owners are wimps and ignore internal issues. HR do not do their job properly as they are bias. Management in the WBL sector is tragic. Learners are numbers, not people to staff. No true progression - only when they need more staff or are making people redundant to cover their backs. Do not take complaints serious. Unprofessional. They make staff put positive reviews on here. Study programme needs more help as learners can be difficult and the admin staff are expected to help when it is not their duty and they do not have the training, it is unfair for them.

Nova will destroy your self confidence

Pros

Finishing at 4:30, although by then you are ready to get out of there. Doing the best you can to help young people despite all of the barriers put inyour way by Nova.

Cons

Dodgy practices that result in funding being taken back mid year consequently causing redundancies and hours being cut for tutors and support staff. Centre managers who will lie to senior management to save their own skin and push the real workers under the bus while taking credit for ideas and good working practices that are not there’s. Pointless cluster managers who just add to a top heavy management structure while hard working employees lose their jobs. Constant high turnover of staff due to the way they are treated by management. Pointless 3 week induction periods for staff that teach them nothing but bad practices in the centres they visit and from the staff that they shadow. Inconsistent IQA support that results in sub standard grades for teaching staff. Unrealistic targets and bonus schemes that will never be met. Learners are just pound notes, if it’s considered that a learner will not achieve they are justified to a level lower in their English and maths and moved on to another provider as soon as adequate funding has been claimed. Learners with additional needs are mixed with other learners even though funding is still claimed for small groups and one to one support. Unqualified teaching staff are left to supervise learners (who’s classes are double the size they should be) due to tutor shortage therefore no learning actually takes place.
