Cons
There are a lot of positive things about Optis, but there is an equal amount of negatives as well. -Your roll as a application engineer at Optis is to answer their support calls and assist their customers from around North America with their software problems and bugs they may experience with the Optis softwares. The most important part of the application engineer role is to support the sales team. Ultimately application engineers sale the software with not much help from the sales team, which MAKES NO SENSE because application engineers do not recieve commission on any sales. You're expected to know the ends and outs of the software without adequate training and time to learn. You're expected to attend sales meetings with customers and to be the person who answers any of the customers technical questions about the software. You're also expected to give training sessions on the different software packages Optis sales. This can be an issue for some with Optis's bad training and minimal exposure to how the software is actually used from and engineering aspect. -The application engineer role is pretty much a glorified sales and customer service position. If you come from an engineering background and expect the same type of structure and day to day responsibilities as you would have at a company that actually manufactures/design products, BEWARE. The only thing Optis makes is software. The company sales software and services, so if you cringe at the thought of being a salesman BEWARE. -If you're hired to be on-site at another company be prepared to do boring redundant studies without much leadership. This is as close as you'll get to doing real engineering work at Optis. -The training on the software is flawed and confusing, coming to this place with little to no lighting experience can be difficult because the training doesnt help you learn much while trying to balance fulfilling the other roles of the applicantion engineer position. DO NOT expect Optis to help you learn lighting. Youre expected to understand and communicate about different aspects of lighting to potential costumers. You're typically presenting in sales meetings to CEO's, R&D management and engineering management on topics that the customer will have more knowledge on than you, so BE PREPARED to answer all of the toughest questions. If your not making sales the company will get rid of you.
