Pros

- They attract some talented, genuine people. But makes friendships fast, these people usually leave within a year. - Free lunch every other Wednesday?

Cons

- Your political game needs to be strong to even survive here. First, be sure to not upset anyone from the old Thomson Reuters regime. Second, be as fake as possible with everyone, including your clients. And third, if you have a complaint or suggestion for improvement keep it to yourself (and never ever share them with HR). - If your political game fails, or you just don't care to play along, you will be exposed to some questionable HR practices. A favorite of One North seems to be the "torture them until they want to leave" method. We're talking asinine improvement plans, weekly check-ins and the eventual excommunication from co-workers that have been turned against you. Why do they do this? Probably because they don't actually have a good reason to fire anyone - they just don't like you because they know you don't like them. - Speaking of work - don't expect a feeling of fulfillment - it's all mindless. You've got Ivy League educated twenty somethings entering tickets for a broken link into an outdated system. Or repurposing old wireframes and designs for new clients because, well, law firms aren't really all that different from one another, are they? And it's all being built on some of the most limiting, antiquated technology out there. - And you can expect the technology to fail you, often. Know that if you accept an "account" position, you will be placed on an on-call rotation that will require you to respond to client "emergencies" 24 hours a day, several weeks out of the year. - Oh, no one told you?? Hmmm....maybe it's because the only people you are allowed to interview with have drank the Kool Aid and are comfortable following a strict script.

We appreciate your feedback and it is disheartening to learn your experience at One North was not a positive one. We pride ourselves on the talent we have as well as the talent we recruit. It is because of this that we feel strongly about maintaining a high caliber of performance. Improvement plans are meant to provide the tools, support and feedback employees need to be successful in their role and at One North. We value the fact that our employee turnover is much lower than other businesses of our size and within our space. Our history with Thomson Reuters is something we have put in the past, but that doesn't mean the deep relationships former Thomson Reuters employees built with each other disappear. These types of shared experiences, which include overcoming challenges and celebrating successes, is what One North is built on, and we regret you couldn't take a larger part in them. As a business that continues to expand, we recognize the need for more structured processes between departments, including HR and Leadership. Your input will contribute to these developments, so we thank you. We also wish you the best of luck on your next adventure. - John & Jeff

Pros

As everyone stated, free beer. But you'll find that at most tech companies now. Marketing and HR people really seem to love their jobs at One North. So you're golden if you go for those positions.

Cons

Not sure hammering that they're relationship-focused to everyone and everything is really working all that well. From what I remember, the relationships between One North and its clients were cold and guarded on a good day. This was an uncomfortable place to work for many reasons. I've never seen so many unhappy employees and clients before coming here. Management was difficult to work with and they usually cleared out of the office at 4:45 while you were expected to stay past when you hear vacuum cleaners. One North seems to be losing talent like crazy and I'm often asked if the company's as good as recruiters are making it sound. The company that's being advertised to new talent is totally unrecognizable to me. There's a lot of truth-stretching out there, so beware. Ask a lot of smart questions during your interviews, please. For your own benefit. I feel so strongly about this I felt compelled to write my first review.

Thank you for taking time to share a review, although it's surprising to learn of the experience described. You are right in that One North is very relationship focused; it's the core of our business and the foundation on which we continue to build. We strive to make relationships count, for clients and employees, but as with any agency or work environment, you'll find some relationships come easier than others. Employee attrition is a normal part of doing business. We understand that One North may not be the right fit for some individuals and in these cases, understand if they decide to find employment elsewhere. Our company attrition is directly aligned with other businesses of our size and in our industry. As other reviews have mentioned, the work can be demanding and require long hours, which is typical of any fast-paced agency environment. We acknowledge that work-life balance takes different forms for everyone and try to accommodate each employee to the best of our ability. Recently we have placed more rigor and training around that with our people managers who have the closest pulse on their teams. As you observed, we have parents across the company that leave work around 5pm so that they can go home and spend time with their families in the evening. What is often not as visible is the fact that these parents continue to work later in the evenings and/or arrive into the office earlier than most others. We would never restrict this flexibility and continuously look for ways to ensure this is available for all One Northerners. We appreciate your candid feedback and hope you've found a better fit in your current role. - John & Jeff

Pros

-Flexibility -Some great benefits -Decent amount of time off

Cons

-Promotions are basically non-existent. When I've asked about it, I've been shot down with the reason being "it just takes a long time to get promoted here" but then told how great I am. I don't at all feel valued and I know others don't either. -The "rules" tend to apply to some, but not others. Everyone is held to a different standard and professionalism is basically non-existent. -One North claims to have such a great culture, but I haven't seen it. Feels very cliquey and gossip basically runs the place. The free alcohol ensures that people get wasted and out of control every chance they get. The people who abuse it, and there are many create a hostile environment for the rest of us. -As other reviewers have mentioned, leadership is top-heavy and many don't contribute much. There are exceptions of course, but for the most part, none of us go to leadership for guidance, it typically isn't there. We usually have to figure it out on our own and watch leadership take the credit for our hard work. -Some managers are great, some are horrible. No consistency. My manager has been awful and is a big part of the reason I'm trying to get out. HR has been made aware of my complaints and done nothing. -While the company tries to listen to its employees I feel that there has been little to no follow-through with feedback. Even when they've said they're going to take action about something, it doesn't happen. -HR tries, but is fairly inexperienced which renders them fairly ineffectual. -They'll fire people and give them x amount of time to leave, forcing the person to stay in a job they've been terminated from while they look for another job. This is to avoid offering severance. Definitely not great for morale. -The work isn't great. Innovation isn't welcome. The technology department isn't held to a high standard of quality.

Know that we have measures in place to hold our Leadership and HR teams accountable for regularly improving the experience and ensuring the well-being of our employees. As mentioned before, this year we’ll be focused on creating more transparency and clarity around career progression and growth opportunities at One North. We do not promote based off a timeline. Instead, we make decisions about each individual’s career based on their demonstrated ability to perform at the next (or new) level. Those that align their own personal career goals and growth with One North’s tend to be the most successful here. It’s important to note that there are also times when parting ways makes more sense for all parties involved.
