Pros

Health insurance Birthday leave Flexible working hours

Cons

I worked at Oritain and unfortunately had a very negative experience. The workplace culture was deeply concerning, with noticeable issues around favoritism, lack of professionalism, and unequal treatment across people. I observed discriminatory behavior and poor communication between departments, which created a toxic environment. Pay was not only below industry standards but also lacked transparency and fairness. There was no clear pathway for growth or performance-based reviews, and management often failed to support or respect other teams. Accountability was lacking, and blame-shifting was common. Overall, I would not recommend working at Oritain unless significant changes are made to leadership, culture, and compensation practices.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. It’s great to hear that you valued some of our benefits, including flexibility and wellbeing support. As part of our recent changes, we’ve put more structure around career pathways, development, and feedback so people have greater clarity on how they can grow with us. We’ve also made a commitment to prioritising internal candidates for roles and providing plenty of opportunities to develop new skills in readiness for the next step in their career. This is an area we’re actively investing in. We remain focused on creating a fair, inclusive, and respectful environment, with clear accountability, transparent practices, and strong communication across the business. Thanks for sharing your view and we wish you all the best for the future.

Pros

Reasonably flexible, working from home is a bit frowned upon, and weren’t allowed to do it regularly, but great for having a fair amount of autonomy regarding appointments and a bit of freedom with start and finish times. Seemed understanding for those with kids. A significant portion of the people were great to work with, particularly those those in the lower tiers of the organisation.

Cons

The work culture was noticeably bad, even when I was a new hire. Witnessed many instances of people crying at work, and a certain portion of the managers were unable to appropriate manage their emotions. Very poor leadership (from CEO down) meant that the managers who were doing a good job were unfairly burdened with the work of those who weren’t. There was obvious cronyism, mostly in senior management and the board of trustees. In some cases this led to competency not seen in other parts of the company, but rarely. Remuneration was poor, and often there were large gaps in the range of staff working in the same job, despite comparable skill and competency. Managers would reprimand staff for discussing salary, and would incorrectly tell staff they were not allowed to discuss salaries (we had no confidentiality clause in our contracts). Due to the frequent restructures (formal and informal), people were being convinced to take positions without proper remuneration for increased workload, including managing staff, which lead to burnout and poor interpersonal relationships. I was genuinely concerned for the well-being of a number of staff, which the culture and workload were a contributor too - do a degree I’ve not seen in another workplace. The most dysfunctional office I’ve worked in, and I wouldn’t recommend working here to anyone.

Thanks for taking the time to make a review. We are disappointed that you feel this way, and do understand some of the frustrations you speak about. The fact the company has grown from 25 staff in 2020 to over 250 now, has meant at times there has been a disconnect between the New Zealand office and globally. This rapid growth has meant we have continually evolved and I do understand this is difficult for some people and that we can do a better job with this communication. The quarterly All Hands meetings are one step in this direction but I accept we can do better. I am sorry you do not recognize many of the great things happening at Oritain - the likes of Sir John Key becoming the Chair of Oritain, the Oritain Leadership Development Program, new office refurbishment, opening the Auckland office, the Oritain Engagement Forum, working with some of the leading brands in the world, attracting new investment to help grow local businesses etc. Once again we are sad that you feel this way and wish you all the best for you future endeavours. If you would like to reach out and discuss this with me personally please feel free to do so. All the best Grant Cochrane CEO

Pros

• Commendable mission to enhance ESG elements in the textile/food industries and hold a significant market share in this testing space. • Diverse and talented workforce - primarily at the lower levels. • Some flexibility with a hybrid work structure, but demands to meet global time zone coverage outside standard 9-5 are frequent.

Cons

• Noticeable discrepancies in culture and work ethic between the two offices (UK v NZ). • Lack of uniformity in the company's output, pay, rewards, and general employment elements is concerning. • HR and support are largely non-existent, with insufficient onboarding and limited personal or professional development opportunities (not just more work due to turnover) for most employees. • Recruitment efforts and focus fall short, hindering the capability to meet and sustain the expected sales targets backed by unsustainable growth practices. • Quarterly reviews and company-wide updates are not effectively implemented or communicated, leading to continued issues that are not adequately addressed. • Restructures and constant strategic direction changes complicate job requirements, contributing to a lack of clarity and cohesion. • Continuous nepotism in promotions + hires and inflated management fosters a toxic ethos where questioning decisions is discouraged - particularly of the CEO, COO, and recent "Chief of Staff" who think and act like they are all beyond reproach.
