Pros

- great medical benefits

Cons

extremely low wages (could barely afford rent), forced shift work/ hours of work can change in a moments notice, management is not approachable, one can be easily outcasted, no real say in what type of work/ department you wish to work in, extremely lazy co-workers, very hard to get time off (if you ask for ANY TIME OFF, management rolls their eyes at you and makes you feel like you should be thankful to them for giving you the time off. There was numerous times that time off was denied even though the employee was a bridesmaid in their sisters wedding!), upper management has ZERO respect for employees and it is "their way or the highway", they has no experience in management and it shows. Overtime is expected, from everyone, there is no work/life balance. Management will go out of their way to be cruel and micromanage the "trouble makers" to try and force them to quit so they do not have to pay severance, while ignoring the actual issues with the company ie large gaps in the schedules, extremely high drayage charges, overall lack of employees.

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear you feel that way. As for salaries, we spend a lot of time benchmarking our total compensation package with that of the competition. In nearly every case it comes in the top 20% and that's before benefits, bonuses, and extras. We encourage anyone who wishes to increase their compensation to discuss with their managers about accreditations and career path that leads to increased compensation. PCB is a strong believer in compensating top talent. It is true that staff will be placed where they and their skills are needed. That is a simple business decision to meet client needs and that's why it is written into the contract and explained repeatedly during interviews. As you know, except in extreme circumstances, staff get over a month of advance notice of shift changes. We understand it takes time to adjust everyday activities and do our best to accommodate that. We also strongly reject the accusation that your coworkers were lazy. PCB considers our team members to be some of the most talented and hard-working in the industry. It shows in their dedication and desire to exceed client expectations. Managers/supervisors also maintain an open door policy. It is not unusual for them to come in on their non-work time so that they can speak to staff in their care who work different hours from them. All supervisors are put through management courses at local colleges and universities to build upon their natural aptitude to nurture their reports. It is unfortunate you did not bring these issues forward during your time with us, but I wish you the best in your future career. Hopefully our paths will cross again in the future.

Racist, Sexist, Demeaning, Bullying, Micromanagers and Owners

Pros

Free lunches around holiday time but don’t fill your plate or appear to eager or you will be chastised by owner for ripping him off or being a pig. So much for a “perk”.

Cons

Paid significantly less if you are a woman or a person of color. Bullying by managers who are not skilled or knowledgeable of the business. Management constantly expects employees to thank them for their job but don’t ask for a raise because you will then be labeled a troublemaker. Some very long term employees who will not change for the better because they “have always done it that way”.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear you feel that way. However, you make several incorrect statements. One very concerning is the allegation that women and people of colour are paid less, therefore Pacific Customs Brokers is sexist and racist. We disagree with that statement. Of the 9 management-level staff, 8 are women, all having risen through the ranks due to talent and hard work. The second-highest management role, Operations Manager, is held by a woman who is also proudly of the Algonquin First Nations. While you claim that women are paid less, you also state that managers are overpaid. Again, we point out that management staff are nearly all women. Our compensation policy considers scope of position, subject knowledge, and areas of responsibility; not colour or gender identity. All managers maintain an open door policy and we invite you to contact any of them whenever you have concerns or would like to explore a career path leading to advancement and therefore increased compensation. Pacific Customs Brokers offers a wide range of possibilities for talented and dedicated staff. We hope you will join us in developing a stronger team for future success.

Pros

Location - very little traffic to fight. Benefits - excellent coverage and extras. Onsite restaurant - for those days when you can't be bothered to pack a lunch. On-site gym & fitness classes - I particularly like the 20 minute classes. Staff parties - Numerous functions per year. Lots of overtime available if you're trying to save up for a trip or special purchase.

Cons

Off a transit route - but the area is growing so it's not far off.
