Pros

The employees! Some of the most amazing people I've ever met. The customers! Open minded, kind people. The merchandise! A wonderful selection that you can be proud to represent.

Cons

Note, I worked for the retail side so this review does not include the restaurant or cafe. The problem? Inconsistent procedures. Lack of proper training to get your job done. I've never worked in an establishment where I have given my all and been so proud of what I do but in return, been so disrespected and unappreciated. Because of upper managements inconsistent expectations, this environment is toxic. One minute you're doing great and the next you're being scolded for executing duties the way you were instructed to do so the week before. I am not the first, nor the last, to have been a target of these issues. Be warned: if you're the type of employee who falls in love with your work, this is not the place for you.

It is sad for everyone when it doesn’t work out, and especially so when the employee very much wanted to succeed. We have consistent procedures that are detailed in our Manual. We give all employees the same basic training, but not all can reach the performance level that is required of the job. Even in those circumstances, when a staff member needs additional training we provide as much as we can without creating a financial hardship on the business. If this additional training does not solve the problem and another position that the employee is qualified for is available anywhere within the company, we offer them that job in an effort to retain the employee. Most retail positions, outside of basic sales positions, require strong administrative and/or visual merchandising skills that not everyone has or has the ability to learn. Sometimes, despite the training, ongoing support and ample time allowed, it doesn’t work out. We hope all of our former team members find success. Best Regards

Poor defines the management.

Pros

Great people, kindred spirits. Good gluten free pizza. Great gifts and toys.

Cons

As a professional, I'd heard rumors of Poor Richards' abusive managing for years within the industry and the downtown community. It is such an adorable establishment; on the outside. Once inside, there's millennial cliques, nepotism, bullying and the unprofessionalism by upper management is something Patricia should pay someone to write a book about. Drama, lies, blame shifting, stealing by family members, the whole nine. I lasted all of three months, then found a real job. It's really a community joke. Shameful.

Pros

The people I worked with were great. It had a unique atmosphere and it nice to have the resturant/coffee shop nearby for lunch. Compensation is good for standard retail positions and average for support and manager positions.

Cons

Individuals are set up to fail by management, replaced, and then the process starts all over with someone else. From the outside it looks like they treat employees well, but the organization has a very high turnover and no loyalty to their people. Most of the people are great, but it was not a good environment. It should have been a red flag that most employees had not been there long. I would not recommend working here if you're looking for anything beyond a temporary position.

During this period of time, we were transitioning to a POS-based system from a basic register system, driven by a sudden growth spurt of the business. There were many changes that the employees had to go through as most of the procedures had to be updated for the new POS system. Everyone received the same training and support, not everyone had the skills needed to learn a computer based POS system, no matter the amount of training received. When an employee cannot fulfill their job duties after training and ongoing support, we look for another placement within the business, which is not always possible to find. There also were a number of employees facing personal challenges at the time. The many accommodations we made to retain those employees through their difficulties placed more burden on other staff members that we did our best to alleviate with part-time, fill-in staff. When an employee cannot, or can no longer, meet the job requirements due to personal, non-work-related circumstances, we do our best to accommodate them within the realities of a small company with a small staff. Our accommodations have included: changed schedule, reduced hours or change to part-time status when requested, re-distribution of job duties within the staff to change or reduce their workload, work from home, time-off, etc. But there is a limit to the accommodations that a small business can make without it creating undue hardship. Sometimes, we all have to come to the conclusion that it just is not a fit for either the business or the employee. We hope all of our former team members find success. Best Regards
