Strong employment standards hindered by management/budget issues
Pros
Largest employer in Queensland. Continued/increased employment during GFC (2007) and COVID Pandemic (2020). Corporate employment standards including Nurse/patient Ratios and available Paid Time Off. (Industrial Relations Education Leave, Reproductive leave, Sick Leave, Bereavement leave, Paternity/Maternity Leave, Recreational Leave with additional for 24hr rotating shifts and W/E Public Holidays, Long Service Leave, Professional Development Leave, Meritorious Sick Leave, Union Conference Leave, Conference Leave.) Very high quality colleagues in Multi Disciplinary Teams. Compassionate and educated.
Cons
Middle Management concentration on ward level Budget, restricting access to available leave citing "operational needs" due to poor retention secondary to poor application of Corporate standards and sometimes actually contradicting those standards, such as; over casualisation and contracted work force. Top - Down work instructions instead of "Magnet Hospital" Principles. Poor rostering, 2 "days off" after Night shift and several sets of Night shifts instead of "blocks" and 6hr shifts instead of an extra day off to compensate 10hour Night shifts. 6hr shifts introduce a 3rd handover to the day, Clinical Handover is the most dangerous time of day for Patients. Inability to fulfil legally mandated minimum safe staffing levels on a regular basis, (weekly). Lack of genuine response to Occupational violence in the workplace despite significant events and "Riskman" reporting.
