Pros

Its a fairly clean factory, with decent test equipment that's regularly maintained. The staff is fairly friendly for the most part, and the raises are decent so long as you work fairly hard for them. Your job will be fairly secure, as they do not really like to fire people if it can be helped. After your 90 days as a temp, you are almost guaranteed a job, even if you aren't the best at being a test technician.

Cons

Despite overtime being voluntary, its something that is noted when it comes time for your review. They have an issue with firing people, and addressing issues when they are brought up, so long as the customers do not complain. There are way too many managers for a small company like this, and they come up with some of the most idiotic and counterproductive ideas you can imagine. A big part of ensuring success, is ensuring upper management likes you. HR is also managing the companies finances. There are a few people that work there, that honestly should not have made it through their 90 day period as a temp, but were hired anyway. The company philosophy is that you should not work for the money, but work to make the company successful. This is a great philosophy, except that you start off at a low hourly wage, and the MRI coil manufacturing industry, is a stressful one to say the very least. Engineering seems to be so bogged down with project deadlines, that serious product issues are being neglected. Very little support for the technicians, and the test instructions are written from an engineering perspective, with corrections being few and far between. Some of the test instructions you cant even follow, because they are either too confusing to read, or simply are wrong and were never updated. If you do make a mistake, its something that will be kept in mind for the duration of your employment. Most of my former coworkers that I spoke to, were actually looking for other places to work around the same time I was. If you do go to work for QED, understand that you will be underpaid, you will be rewarded for the good things you do, but mistakes outweigh any good things you do and are remembered for far longer.

Typical factory job

Pros

Pay is pretty good. Raises are decent. Clean place with heat and air conditioning.

Cons

When the owner was there on a regular basis it didn't seem like a bad place to work. Now that the new(er) VP has all but taken over the place has gone down hill in a big way. Excessive mandatory overtime. Management pushing their jobs off on team leads and other employees. Constantly being asked for ideas to make things better, and then not being implemented or giving us the "They (higher ups) don't want to do that" answer. Ideas being pushed on us that have a very because I said so feel to them, and if you ask questions about it be prepared to be berated for a good 3-5 minutes by supervision in front of everyone in your cell. The owner has said in presentations that he doesn't want QED to be just a job, but with the way people are treated it is definitely just another factory job.
