Pros

Helping the ppl who comes through that door. Benefits, pension for when you retire are decent.

Cons

The list is endless. Let’s just say, it’s one thing to have horrible clients, but it’s a whole new deal when you have horrible workers, supervisors, managers etc. you gotta keep your true feelings to yourself, can’t trust anybody. More trivial things are, horrible facility (eg. mice, bad air flow, disgusting bathrooms), phones are from like the 70s, location itself is inconvenient. Parking takes like a fourth of your pay check (at least it feels like it). Ramsey county does not even provide their workers cheap eating utensils....even though I always come prepared, I’ve never seen such a company. My experience so far is truly disappointing, however I am here to help people like myself and will put up with it jus a bit longer because I still have hope that it will be a great place again some day.

Pros

The only good thing I can think of is that if you are there long enough you qualify to receive a pension.

Cons

Ramsey County is the most abusive environment in which it has been my misfortune to work. The commissioners swan about making over $85,000 a year for what is essentially a part-time job but are clueless about what is going on with the rank and file. It is an extremely hierarchical institution in which change occurs at a sloth's pace. Department directors only provide the commissioners with enough information about projects to stroke their egos and to make themselves look good. Individuals are promoted to positions for which they are not qualified based solely it being "his or her time". There is at least one director in a very public position for which he is not qualified and is the laughing stock of peers in other agencies. Policies abound, including one which is supposed to encourage a respectful work environment. It looks good on paper but in practice it is completely ignored. Complaints about employee abuse and victimization fall on deaf ears. While there is a policy regarding diversity, there seems to be little awareness that this means more than hiring people of color - I'm caucasian and even I can see glaring omissions. I could go on . . . .

IS Dysfunction

Pros

Good pay and benefits and an opportunity for public service. Training is also a possibility as well as opportunities to work from home and transfer to other departments. The constant turnover in IS creates an opportunity to get in the door and transfer to a more respectful better-managed department.

Cons

Unless you're a management pet be prepared to be disrespected and abused. IS is very much a top-down department and the number of times bad management behavior has been brought to her attention without action, it must be condoned if not outright encouraged. Lot's of unhappy employees past and present.
