Bullying Culture, Incompetent Management and HR

Pros

Unfortunately, there are very few positives to report about RSSL. However, the semi-frequent chocolate shop was a nice addition ( if you enjoy out of date Mondelez products). I genuinely felt that most of my colleagues at a junior level were kind and hardworking individuals, and they are the ones that showed genuine support towards each other and lifted team spirits during difficult periods of stress and understaffing.

Cons

The first negative I would like to highlight is one that has been felt consistently by many peers and former colleagues, and one that time and time again, RSSL fail to acknowledge and sweep under the carpet. This is the bullying management and HR culture, compounded by incompetence, that fails to listen to employees, especially junior ones when complaints are made. The senior leadership team are happy to put on a front of 'caring for staff' and 'speaking up about problems', but in practise, staff are often told to keep concerns quiet, are left in tears in meetings after threatening interactions, and have been given incorrect advice from HR that directly opposes their own policies, and leads to the detriment of staff's mental health. Many staff have little to no confidence in the management. Secondly, the promotion of employees to managerial and senior positions is flawed. Often times, staff will be promoted based on their length of service with a distinct lack of regard towards their academic qualifications or merit. Some managers possess little technical skills and knowledge in the fields they are supposed to be leading in. On the other hand, talented and motivated junior staffs are kept at lower positions and severely overworked. Thirdly, RSSL has an extremely high turnover rate, with many staff members staying for less than 1 year at the company. This is a real shame as they seem to attract high calibre talent, but no matter what marketing suggests and company values supposedly uphold, if staff are not happy, they will leave, and they frequently do. Overall, I would suggest you do not work at RSSL. This is not a happy company for many.

Pros

Not really much pros. There were a few nice people in team but upper management was terrible which made the whole experience bad.

Cons

Upper management has a habit of covering up all the mistakes and issues. There is so much workload and they cannot seem to handle it. its a constant cycle of people leaving and new people being hired. Due to stress, being over worked and having to do over time without pay there is a high turnover.

We completely acknowledge your comments- we know it’s complex running a contract business to get the right level of resource to manage client needs and whilst growing at such a fast rate. Our retention we are proud to say is very high and we particularly focus on growing our talent for lateral moves and promotions within the business. We regularly hold listening and development discussions, as well as the recent pulse survey for your feedback. If you wish to have a confidential conversation with our MD, then please do so…she would be very keen to hear more. Previous ‘coffee chats’ have resulted in a wide range of interventions from individuals feedback.

Pros

Some good benefits like bonus, family pay as well as expired chocolates. Good quality of lab testing

Cons

One of the worst scientific companies to work for. They overwork you, no time for breaks and short lunches and expect you to do overtime without any pay. My day was just packed with testing after testing to meet client deadlines which is the most important thing to rssl. They think 100 times before they say no to client even if you are short staffed and having to do a lot more than just 1 person's job. Promotions are hard to come by unless someone leaves and management are great at hand picking who they like to promote vs who actually deserve it. Management doesn't take well to feedback and also expect you to work on your personal development but they don't give you a time to breathe let alone work on your development. The environment at rssl is so toxic and I have seen many great analysts come and go which is a shame to rssl. Rssl is not able to keep its staff working there for longer unlike other companies because of how they treat their staff. I'm glad I finally took the courage to leave this toxic company and I would not recommend it to anyone! There are other amazing companies with better pay, career opportunities and managers who actually care about their staff and not treat them like numbers. Rssl is clever in that they replace former staff with new graduates who are hardworking and hungry to learn but for a low pay.

Thank-you for your feedback. I am sorry you did not value your time here at RSSL and I trust your new career is working out well for you. Our current staff turnover rate is 8% for this year, which is excellent compared to our peers. In your feedback you have raised a number of points that are of concern and I would be grateful if you could reach out please to the Managing Director or General Manager for a confidential telephone call.
