A Serious Lack of Leadership; An Unstable President

Pros

Free parking One of a few ad agencies in town

Cons

Cons? The boss is a con. Literally. Her only emotion is anger. Her partner once suffered a suspected heart attack in the middle of a pointless meeting at 4 pm on a Thursday and she shrugged her shoulders and said flippantly, “ah, I’ll visit him later.” There’s zero structure here. There’s no intermediary between a very junior team and the president. Meaning, you can't create iterations of your work before taking it to the very head of the agency. Seriously, no Sr Art Director, no ACD, or CD to bolster/upgrade the work — just a team of very junior people and the president. The worst part? When you do take your work to the president, if she doesn’t like it, she will slap your wrist very hard and hold a very, very long grudge. Sounds like a great place to grow and nurture your creative ideas, doesn’t it? One day, someone in the office was sick as a mutt — sneezing, coughing, blowing their nose — in front of the whole team the president said, “you’re a hypochondriac,” in the most condescending possible. These are just a few of the stories from a very short time at this place. If you like to be bullied and belittled, this place is for you. If you have a spine and want to do good work, apply to one of the other agencies in town.

Pros

The clients had some fun, creative projects. It gave me experience in the agency industry.

Cons

Management was unstructured and disorganized. They piled way too much work on their employees and there was high turnover with very little knowledge transfer. The owner derailed projects when she got involved and then complained about running up the budgets. She was very manipulative and bullied people into doing her bidding rather than trusting her own employees.
