Pros

Learning was really good and I had an opportunity to get exposure to all sorts of different big data technologies while I was on the job. I got recognition for my efforts on the job too. Fast growing startup that has a lot of opportunities to grow in front-end, back-end, and big data technologies. Agile methodologies are the life blood of this company and I really like agile. Depending on who you are this could be a pro/con.

Cons

Management lied to me. They said I would have a salary re-evaluation at my 90 day mark. It didn't happen for over 6 months. And even when it did happen the raise I got wasn't what I was expecting for the level of effort and impact I had been putting in. Long hours. Especially around March/April of every year there are very long hours you'll need to work to get stuff done. Understaffed. They couldn't fill the needed positions quick enough for all the work they had to do. I felt very overwhelmed the whole time. Several weeks of 60 hours. Poor judgement. They asked for the $5000 sign-on bonus back because I quit before a year working there despite the fact that I played a crucial role in them renewing a very large contract that kept their business going.

Well hidden toxicity

Pros

Good core values on paper. Great place to just exist and skate by if you don't care to grow or change. Good pay.

Cons

This is the most toxic company I have ever worked for, but it's very subtle. I am still unlearning trauma responses developed during my short time here and the only reason I would recommend taking a job here is if you can't find anything else and want to learn everything you shouldn't do. The "core values" sound nice but are not a reality (except for one, "let your geek flag fly", which is somehow still toxic). Employees aren't trusted to do their jobs and every action requires an insane level of justification. Planning is entirely top down and little to no consideration is given to what subject matter experts know. Many poor decisions are made in the name of security (like spying on employees) but the organization's actual security is comically bad. Engineering practices are stuck in the past and although the company claims to do Agile/SCRUM, it's in name only. There is open hostility between the many silos, and some teams have very problematic superiority complexes. Much of the "top talent" here is not good at their jobs and is threatened by, and will resist, anyone competent. Standard practices here are staggeringly inefficient. I believe that the only reason the company is still in business is because their government clients don't have the expertise to realize just how bad the product and company are. There's also no sick leave. For a company that has "stay human" as a core value, that's pretty messed up.

Pros

The leadership team spends more time and energy to ensure that employees and customers are going to get what they need to be successful. There is a focus on growth with senior leadership coming in from outside to help grow this small business and position themselves on key programs in the national security space.

Cons

The team is high output and high performing and it can feel like the team is in surge mode at all times. Most of the company has a decent work life balance but the company is growing aggressively and punches above its weightclass, typically by working both harder and smarter.
