KSM Consulting- Skeptical of Business Practice

Pros

Pay was decent, most coworkers at my level were very sharp.

Cons

At first I was very excited to take a job at KSMC, as I was offered a variety of experiences in addition to professional growth. What I got was the exact opposite. One client experience, no manager-level concern for professional improvement, and a culture of favoritism that poisons the company from the inside. Frankly, I have never worked for a company so ingrained in its own politics. The managing director has managed to develop a business that is entirely inclusive to sycophants, which indicates his desire for control. A year long attempt at scaling the business had failed, leading to the resignation of CFOs, Admins, and normal consultants (myself). The management team is extremely selective in regards to information shared with the rest of the company, which had made me extremely skeptical of the business practices as a whole. They preach a "not a 9-5 business" that scores "ever-changing, interesting projects." However, if you aren't in the inner circle, prepare to be dumped to a cash-cow state contract in a project where poor performance isn't disciplined. I never again want to be part of a business where revenue relies on exploiting clients who aren't intelligent enough to realize the endless churn of "crises" is easy $$ for the company managing it. Time and time again I tried expressing my concerns, asking for advice and new ventures to take part of. I was met with vague plans that turned out to be complete lies. Finally, upon turning in my resignation, I was met with a disappointing lack of professionalism. Not a single exit interview was scheduled (I received the "silent treatment" from my managing director, who previously told me that he "wanted to hear every concern" and would "keep [me] because [I] was a valuable asset." My manager didn't even shake my hand -- after 1.5 years of dedication to his project alone. Leaving this company was the best thing I could do for my career.

We are sorry to hear about your negative experience at KSMC. In 2017 we established a development program to help ensure that employees are continually challenged and meet their personal career goals. It is meant to be a career “checks and balances” for our fast-paced consulting firm. It is also our practice to discuss an employee’s reasons for leaving the company, but clearly, this was not done. If you would still like to share your thoughts, we would appreciate a chance to discuss them with you. Please contact our HR Department at info@ksmconsulting.com.

Interesting clients, toxic culture

Pros

Great place to immediately learn a lot, especially if you are early career or new to consulting. Interesting client work and partnerships where you will be exposed to great opportunities, but all self driven. Definitely some good people but varies widely by project.

Cons

Honesty, too many to list -- a bunch of overconfident dudes with questionable ethics trying to keep private equity owners happy; the values are more lip service than anything else. If you aren't in the close knit circle who started working there 5+ years ago, you're 100% disposable. Plan on working 50-60 hrs/week or more if managing people (if management, you are set up to fail). Unlimited PTO just means we don't really want you to take PTO. Some efforts to address operational challenges, but it will take a few years to really mature. No diversity in leadership (and nobody there cares).

Values are just words on the wall

Pros

Interesting work (when they are able to give you their treasured "billable hour"). Very intelligent groups of people that work very hard.

Cons

Preach their values but behaviors never reflect what they say. Everything single thing is about revenue and billable hours. They eliminated about a dozen positions 4 days before last Christmas in the middle of a pandemic.....all after bragging over and over again about a "record year" in revenue and headcount...and also praising their #1 value "empathy". All without any explanation. The truth was 2 big contracts were not renewed and it was a short term budget decision. The saddest experience was during the Spring of 2020 when DEI became very important (to them). They gave the company a "free pass" on 2 billable hours so they could explore DEI topics. 2 hours. It wasn't for the company...it was so they could pat themselves on the back.
