Cons

Collaborative decision-making is a mask for micro-management Lack of diverse management team - majority of projects in Africa yet NO Managing Director of African descent. Elitist Toxic management environment Professed values do not translate to how the organization treats certain members of its staff Complete lack of respect for subject matter experts in Finance and Operations No room for real advancement

A dark parody of what a nonprofit should be.

Pros

Bright co-workers, nice office, work from home options. Decent salary for the industry and moderately interesting projects.

Cons

Managing Director is toxic and should have been fired years ago. Literally a laundry list of fireable offenses that have been ignored. Morale is low and the environment is cruel. Management should keep their personal business to themselves and not burden staff with their marital troubles. It's a professional work environment-keep it in your pants.

Thank you for your review. We value all feedback and regret that your experience at R4D was a not a positive one. Although we’re not perfect, staff climate surveys indicate that staff say they enjoy working for R4D and the majority report that they like and respect their managers. R4D has policies in place to address the issues you mentioned and has recently taken action to address concerns about the issues you raised. R4D’s management team recognizes that the people are what make the organization special and we are committed to fostering a respectful and vibrant culture.

Pros

Flexible work, growing organization,standing desks

Cons

Leadeship team so white, Performative DEI work, No voice for minorities, Clueless managers/ SPD, PD. Rat race to promote people every 2 years, affinity to Ivy league colleges, differential treatment for people of color. Most people cannot even tell what the organization does and most managers do not know how to manage conflict or with empathy.

Dear former employee — Thank you for your feedback regarding the need to improve diversity, equity (DEI) and inclusiveness at R4D. It is true that we can and must do better. Please know that R4D is fully committed to embracing and advancing DEI values, and we are taking active steps to ensure these values are reflected in our internal policies, recruitment, compensation, opportunities for advancement and our staff composition at every level, but especially in leadership roles. In 2017, R4D made DEI an organizational priority, but we did not set our goals high enough. We have recently revived our DEI work with a public commitment to anti-racist values and practices and a much more aggressive organizational action plan. Part of this will include addressing management issues through upward feedback channels, training and accountability mechanisms for following through. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. We appreciate this feedback.
